covid-19; wealth inequalities

disclaimer: this is a really old post, like i was drafting it on april 7 so if stuff isn't right forgive me please

i'm sure you saw my last post, but i'm gonna get back into talking about politics and social issues cause that's my thing!

now i've been trying to stay informed. the news is on almost all the time (not my fault) and i've been hearing a couple things over and over that point back to wealth inequalities. correct me if i'm wrong, but without further ado, i present you: covid-19 and wealth inequalities. (idk why i'm making this a big dramatic thing but i am lol).

(if you really don't care much for social issues,!you can skip. i know this is a hard time and i'm not sure if this is what i should be talking about rn, but i think it's worth sharing)

1) access to testing
if any of you have been staying informed, there's not enough tests. medical professionals have told the news that they can't get a coronavirus test even though they've been in contact with covid-19 positive patients. another man was in contact with people from wuhan, china during his time in vietnam and couldn't get a test. on the other hand, i've been reading the stories of instagram influencers or celebrities who simply call up their personal doctor, or pull some strings to get a test. some people were alarmed at the rate nba stars were getting tested, while average people remained waiting for tests and test results.

2) social distancing
i was talking to my mother about this one, and i think it's also worth paying attention to. richer people have the funds and the space to pay the expensive hospital bills and self-quarantine. for many other americans, that simply isn't true. for example, i've heard of a kid in my school who lives with 14 other people. they probably don't have the space to self-quarantine, which is concerning because it allows the spread of the virus. places where people on the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder live, on average, tend to be far more crowded then houses in beverly hills, california.

3) "we're all in this together" mentality
now when i heard many celebrities saying "we're all in this together guys!" it made sense. we all are, stuck in our houses trying to stop the spread and protect those around us. unfortunately, it didn't sit right with me and lady gaga on the jimmy fallon show (at home edition) i think pinpointed it exactly. she said something along the lines of that the sentiment was great. but in reality the experiences of her and jimmy during this time will be different than for example a woman who's still working
and has kids at home.

i believe i had more, but those are my main 2-3 points. i feel like during this time, it's important to understand these wealth inequalities and change our attitude to this virus as a result. i know you guys might not be able to do anything about it, but it's nice to stay informed.

xoxo,
silena 💘
