If you are introducing an original character into a series with an endgame relationship in mind, develop the character, not just the romance. Don't make him/her/them just a toy to be played with — make them have their own struggles, flaws, and strengths.
By doing this, two strong characters will come together and have an even better satisfaction to the reader.
