thirteen

the meeting did not start as "fun" like johnny said. it was just the pair, johnny, and a few more kids. where was the excitement?

"mark, jani," johnny started off. "meet the new subjects!"

"erm.." mark says. "hi im mark, and this is jani." he nods his head in the direction of the girl.

"hi." jani says as she raises her eyebrow at johnny. the man shrugs in return.
she has not expected this. having friends was what she always dreamed of, but were these teenage boys?
she was sure that they would one day dread to be outside like how she did everyday, she did not want to them to stay if they were going to struggle like she was.

mark on the other hand loved staying in the labs, he wanted to prove that he was the superhuman he was meant to be. of course, the thought being influenced no one other than johnny, who was constantly feeding him compliments left and right.
jani had no problem of mark having this idea in his head, she loved seeing him happy. they just didnt have the same perspective of what their dream was.

"ill leave you kids to talk and get to know each other." the man leaves the room. silence builds up again as the kids fidget with their fingers.

"so uhm," the blonde boy speaks up. "my name is jeno. the rest of their names are jaemin, donghyuck, jisung and renjun."

"nice to meet you two!" squeaks jaemin.

"yeah nice to meet you too," jani replies back. "uh so youre here for testing too?" the boys nod back. crap, what if they hate the testing? theres no backing out now "have long have you and mark been testing?" donghyuck suddenly asks.

"well, jani has been here before me but ive been testing for about five years."

"five?" renjun says in a scowl. "dont you ever get tired of it?" this leaves mark stunned, hes never thought about the long hours of testing. "well they don't overwork us, i started when i was eleven and im sixteen now. its no problem for me." renjun raises his eyebrow at mark before mumbling, which results to jeno jabbing his side.

"what about you jani?" jaemin looks at the girl with curious eyes. "i started when i was six, im fifteen now." the room's atmosphere quieted down, they didnt know how to reply. they boys had no idea that the pair was so into the training, or even training for this long.

"jesus..." jeno whispers. this is more years than jisung has ever lived.

"whyd you start so early?" renjun safely asks.

"well my dad runs this place, he started testing on me because well..."

"your powers?" jani nods towards the chinese boy. "we both been preoccupied with it, i barely get to go outside anymore or see my mom."

"well this sounds like no fun at all!" donghyuck cries out. "i thought we would be like a superhero team like the avengers."

"is that seriously why you joined the team?" donghyuck looks at mark with one eyebrow raised. "yeah, it sounded cool. no?" mark shakes his head and smiles to himself.

"no of course its cool!" mark exclaims. "that's the main reason i agreed to joining, i feel so cool completing my tests with high scores." jani giggles to herself as she sees mark grin widely with pride.

"now youre thinking what im thinking, man!" donghyuck hi-fives mark resulting to jani laughing out loud. "i would definitely want to be spiderman!" mark looks at the younger boy with scrunched eyebrows. spider? man?

"sorry but we never got the chance to watch the avengers, so if its a really good movie we wouldn't be able to relate!" jani quickly explains.

"man that sucks!" jisung says. "so no life here?" yep no life, no freedom.

mark quickly looks at jani and nudges her side.
what do you mean? she shakes her head. ill tell you later.

"well me and mark has this ongoing competition, whoever has the most wins during our tests."

"wins?"

"yeah well," mark sits up in his chair. "we have to run in a certain amount of time, solve these tests, and many more."

"currently im in the lead!" jani smiles proudly.

"for now!"

"hm i should join so i could beat the both of you!"

"whatever, i could take all of you." jeno confidently places his hands on the back of hands while he lays back into his chair.

"that's because youre fucking strong!"

the teens spent the rest of the afternoon bickering and getting to know one another, jani could feel they were going to be friends after all.

"is the last one on his way?"

"yes sir, hes being escorted as we speak." mr jung, the brain of this operation, places his glasses on the ridge of his nose as he look at the teens again from the double sided window. he smirks to himself.

"give him the best treatment, we wouldn't want our secret weapon to be tired before his meeting tomorrow." the assistant bows before informing another worker.

"tend to subject zhong chenle!"
