I put the paper back where I found it wide-eyed.
I looked up to see Smithy climbing down from her house with a different backpack, it was black. She walked over to me. I didn't say anything and just stared at her. "Don't act so surprised". She teased knocking me out of my trance.
"Yeah, sorry, my house is over there". I pointed to a yellow house across the street. She grabbed the other bag from me. I saw her quickly check if the paper was there. We walked across the street and unlocked the front door.
When we walked in I saw her looking around as if she was creating a mental map of my house. I lead her up the stairs and to the bathroom. "You can take a shower in here, I'll be in my room, that's down the hall".
"Thanks". She smiled before walking into the bathroom and closing the door. I heard the water turn on. I walked over to my room and took my green cheeked conure out of her cage.
"I don't know what to think about her. I mean she is trying to kill my mom, but she's obviously hurting in some way. And she has to have some sort of reason, I just don't know what to do". Raptor, my bird cocked her head and squawked.
"You're lucky. You don't have to deal with stuff like this," I laughed before realizing how absurd this was, "how many people have had experiences like this? Moving to a new town and becoming friends with someone who's trying to kill your mom". Raptor hopped up my arm and started to bite my hair.
"Ow," I said putting Raptor back in my lap, "I should get started on my homework".
About 10 minutes later Smithy came into my room dressed in all black clothing and hair matted to the side of her face. "Thanks for that, oh, you have a bird" Smithy walked over and sat on my bed next to me.
"Yeah, this is Raptor". I picked her up and put her on Smithy's lap.
"So, what does your mom do, you said she worked at a hospital"? Smithy asked.
I debated lying to her before I decided to tell the truth because she already knew. "Yeah, she works at the hospital here". Just as I said that, my mom texted me. 'They just told me that I don't need to stay late, because it's my first couple of weeks working, so I'll bring home some dinner around 6'.
I texted her back 'My friend is over here, can you bring her some dinner too? She can't go home right now. I'll talk to you about it when you get home'
'Of course I can! See you at 6.'
Well, that was a weird coincidence. "We should do our homework".
"Sure".
Smithy took her binder out of her bag. She opened it and took out an English assignment. She had finished all of her other homework already.
"Where did you go in English"? I asked
"I had to go to a different class because I write and a read at a higher level than the rest of the kids in our grade, but everything else about English I'm at a normal level".
"Oh cool, did you finish the rest of your homework already"?
"Yeah, I finished it all in class because all the teachers go too slow".
"So, you're like really smart, can't you take classes at the senior level"?
"No, the principal won't let me, he says 'We don't want anyone to feel bad, so you have to stay at grade level honors classes'". She said, mocking the principal. I laughed and nodded.
She finished her homework about half an hour before I did. Nothing much happened for the rest of the time, not until my mom go home.
