I sat on my bed for what felt like a year, staring at my wall. A knock on my door made me jump."Jeremy? Can I come in"? My mom spoke from the other side of the gray door.
"Yeah, sure". I answered shaking my head. The door creaked open and my mom stepped in.
"I'm sorry about earlier, I shouldn't have held things from you". She sat down next to me.
"Its okay, mom, Smithy told about everything".
"So, you probably are joining her," she stood up, "knowing Samantha she probably made it look like everything Warrington Inc. was doing was awful". I feel anger rising in her voice
"No, um, I actually want to work with you, and she didn't do a good job with making you seem like bad people".
"That's great Jeremy, I can take you to the lab tomorrow after you get home from school, but it's late, and you should get some sleep". My mom walked over to the door and opened it. "Also, stay away from Samantha, I don't want you getting hurt".
The night was quiet, except for the occasional car that drove down the street, and the tree that tapped on my window with the wind.
I woke up in the morning to the beep of my alarm clock. 6:15. I lie in my bed staring at the ceiling for about 10 minutes before deciding that I needed to get up. I wasn't quite sure that I wanted to even go to school, due to the night before, but I couldn't skip the second day at school.
I pulled on a pair of jeans and a blue hoodie. Downstairs I grab an apple and put a piece of bread in the toaster. My bag was still upstairs, so I trudged back up to my room and put my binder containing my homework back in my bag. I heard the toaster pop from down the stairs, I slipped my backpack over my shoulder and went to get my toast. By now it was 6:45, and time to head out. It was weird, I hadn't seen my mom at all this morning, but she was probably at work. I stepped outside, the brisk New Jersey fall air hit me, and I started the stretch to school.
When I arrived at 7 o'clock homeroom was around half full. I scanned the room. I saw Winston talking to a dark-haired, olive-skinned boy, I approached them.
"Hey, Winston, do you mind if I join your conversation"?
"Oh hey Jeremy, of course, you can join us. This is Demitri," Winston turned in his chair to face Demitri, "Demitri, this is Jeremy, he started here yesterday".
"Hi," Demitri chuckled and looked at me through his black glasses, "welcome to this shit hole".
Winston playfully punched Demitri in the arm, "Dude, be nice".
I sat down next to Winston and shyly joined the conversation. It was nice to have something normal. Maybe I could just forget about the abnormalities of this town and have some regular friends.
