My breath caught in my throat as I saw it.
I swiftly weaved between other displays.
Sat patiently at the other end of the room, encased in crystal like oglass was my trident. The black unpolished metal sucked the light out of the container.
A smile broke across my lips as i swam (over the guards lying on the floor) to get to it. I reached towards it but closed my fist hesitantly. I hadn't touched it since-

I heard the doors burst open, the mer looked down at her colleagues and back at me. "You!" The guard shouted.

I let out a groan and rolled my eyes. "Yes" I asked innocently and batted my eyelashes twice.

The mermaid let out an annoyed snarl and charged towards.

I threw a punch at the glass but my fist bounced back. I let out a string of curses and clutched my throbbing hand.

The mermaid was getting closer now. "Oh no you don't" she hissed and drew her crossbow.

I sent one last desperate kick at the glass.

The glass cracked.

Spiderwebs raced across its surface until it couldn't hold itself together.
The glass floated around me like snow on a cold winter morning.

The guard froze as she watched me wrap my hand around the cold metal.

I smiled wildly as I felt the hum of power surge through me and fill my veins again.
The power was ancient; older than me, maybe as old as the gods.

And it was mine again.

A burst of energy exploded out of it. The wave sent the remaining guard flying into the wall.
The impact tore at my clothes and roared in my ears.

The room calmed again, the only thing to be heard was the thumping of my heart. I looked around at the empty space.

Until The doors were flung open and shouts filled the room.

"It came from in here."

My thoughts were abuzz in my head. I wasn't going to make it out of here unnoticed, not after that.

I slipped the trident beneath the layers of my cloak and sped toward the exit.

"Stop right there" a guard pointed a crossbow at me.

They really had no idea who I was… had it been that long?

I gave a sheepish smile and raised my hands.

The hushed whispers of mers were silenced as we walked into the room.
The high arch ways were decorated in marine flowers and starfish. Small banners floated gracefully.

I wasn't looking at the room though, My gaze immediately fixed to the mermaid sat on the throne.
Queen Ezlyn.
Her beautiful tail held all the colours I could think of, the shape of it resembled something of a Betta fish. The fins floated on a non-existent tide, it almost reminded me of a human dress.
"Speak" her voice boomed across the throne room.

I tugged and tested the restraints they had put on my wrist. Just what I'd thought, weak.

The Mers surrounding the edges of the room fixed their gaze on me.

I went to open my mouth but the guard holding me had beat me to it. "This mer was caught sneaking around in the treasury and has been arrested on suspicion of helping the robbery attept" he replied.

I shook off their grip and surprisingly they let go. "I'm not a mer" I mumbled under my breath.

One of the guards glared at me but didn't say anything.

The queen's dulling golden scales shimmered in the light. "Is that the only reason you come to me captain?"

I whipped my head to meet the guard. Captain? Him? I chuckled slightly. The captain had a smaller frame but had twice the amount of muscle than any other mer. I could see it now though the way he held himself; his head held high, chest puffed out slightly.

He nodded stiffly.

Before anyone could add anything else I took my chance, "aw come on, that's no way to treat an old friend". Unlike the queen I didn't need to shout across the room to get my voice across.
One of the many perks of being a siren.

No one recognised me apparently.

Queen Ezlyn raises an eyebrow, "Have I met you before?" She asks politely.

I shrug casually, "Honestly I'm a bit offended no one recognises me" I smile and look around the large room.

The guards flinch as I undo my cloak.

I let it float to the ground before letting out a sigh.

Gasps ring out as they see my black scales.

The queen's face flashed with recognition but she quickly pulled her face back to neutral.

The guards surrounding me step away and the ones by Queen Ezlyn tighten their circle around her.

The sound of the chains snapping echoes through the room. I brush them off as if they were seaweed before picking up my trident from the folds of my cloak. "Queen Ezlyn of the mer kingdom may I present the Siren of the north" I proudly say and mockingly sketch a bow.

The room erupts into a chaos. People shouting and stampeding to the exits.

The queen's voice silences them. "Stop" she booms and rises from the throne. "Why are you here?" She says calmly.

I look to the trident in my hand "you stole something of mine… so it only fair I come and get it." I shrug.

The great Queen of the mer looks down at me. So I stare right back at her.
Silence fills the room as everyone watches our dominance contest.
She pulled away.

A satisfied smile creeps across my face, "Well I should get going" I sighed.

The guards swam closer to stop me.
The captain couldn't shoot a warning fast enough as one guard laid a hand on my shoulder.

I met her eyes.

She froze on the spot and fear filled her pretty eyes.

I slammed the end of my trident into the floor causing a powerful wave of force to knock the guards away from me.

Screams rung out from the small crowd.

I smiled coldly. "Thank you for your... hospitality" I sarcastically added before slipping out of the throne room.
