The next morning I was woken from my deep self pitying slumber by a loud thumping knock on the door. I forced myself up and out of bed, dragging my feet across the floor to the door. I opened it without checking, my sleepy head not thinking clearly.
I hadn't seen him since I'd been back, I hadn't wanted to, he had broken my mothers heart.
“Dad. What are you doing here?” I mumbled, shocked by his presence.
“Elle called me” He whispered. “She said I needed to talk to you”
I frowned. Elle needed to stop trying to fix my life. It had been fine before she had tried. Besides her attempts had so misguided it wasn't funny.
I looked at my father blankly,
“There is nothing you can say to make me feel any better about anything.”
Dad nodded. “I know.”
I sighed and invited him inside. Regardless of everything, I still loved him, he was my dad and turning him away seemed wrong.
As I made coffee he sat down at the table.
When I brought his coffee to him he murmured. “I did love her.”
“Who?”
“Your Mom.”
“You left her.” I replied
“We stopped trying to fix the gap that was widening. We gave up.”
“You Gave up” I corrected him. He was the one who walked out.
He smiled sadly and nodded. “I gave up.”
I scoffed and sipped my coffee.
“The truth is, it seemed easier to leave and forget everything I had shared with your Mom, than it did to fix everything. I was a coward.”
“Yes. You were”
“Don't be like me.”
My eyes shot up and met his. Surely he wasn't insinuating I was being a coward by shutting Gabriel out of my life? Gabriel had lied to me, he'd hurt me.
“Elle told me what she did.”
“Then you'll kindly stop insinuating that I am anything like you!” I exclaimed.
“Don't give up.”
I softened. I was giving up. I was giving up on love, true love. I hadn't even given Gabriel, or Elle a chance to explain. What had they expected I would though? I felt my eyes rush with tears.
“They hurt me Dad. They lied to me. It's like prom night all over again, except this time I'm in love with the guy.”
“It's not like prom night.” Dad replied. “Gabriel loves you. He only has eyes for you.”
“You've met him?” I was confused, how?
Dad nodded and sipped on his coffee. “He called me yesterday before the show and gave me his free ticket.”
Realization set in, Gabriel had known I was the lead, or at least was suspicious of the fact. Looking back on the past few weeks, it was obvious to me now too.
“You were there?”
He nodded and smiled proudly. “I know I've done stupid things, hurt you, hurt your sister.” He looked down at the table. “Hurt your Mom. But watching you up there, made me so proud to be any part of you.”
