Words. They can be so powerful. They stick with you, become a part of you, and if those words were particularly bad, they affect you until you can figure out how to cast them out. Looking in my mirror for instance, never had positive repercussions. The minute I saw myself I'd think all the things anyone had ever said about the way I look.
Just when I was beginning not to care anymore. Gabriel came along. It was hard to believe that someone like him could be even remotely interested in me, and it was judgmental of me to think that way, I knew it. I just couldn't help it. He's the epitome of good looking, and I am so definitely not.
Words that had filtered me for so long, had come flooding back, I wasn't good enough, not for someone like him. No matter how much he said it, I would never feel it.
After he left I acted like he'd never been there. I lay back down on the sofa with a glass of wine and watched something on television. I was falling asleep again when I woke to a knock at the door. I glanced over at the clock on the wall. It was almost 8pm I frowned and stood up. When I opened the door I almost died of shock.
“Serena? What are you doing here?”
She smiled and threw her arms around me. “Madi and I decided that one of us should come early. Moral support.”
I hugged her back and pulled in her through the door. “I really don't need support as such, but I am glad you're here.”
“I've got a motel booked for tomorrow, but I was hoping I could crash here tonight? Unless you're... bit on the side is here?”
I shook my head “He's not here, and of course, You can stay here, you don't need a motel.”
“Yeah, I kind of do.” Serena laughed and motioned a circle with one hand, and had her index finger going in and out simulating sex. “Wouldn't want to walk in on anything.”
“Ugh, fine. How long are you here?”
“Well, that depends.”
“On?”
“I got a job interview here, I mean I really did come to support you, but I also got a call last week about a job here. It was going to be a surprise, but well stuff happened.”
“Oh my God Serena!” I shrieked.
“I'm glad you're happy.”
I looked at my beautiful friend and smiled. Happy didn't even cover it. I was ecstatic. Serena flipped her long strawberry blonde hair then placed her bag down on my sofa. She eyed the empty wine glass then frowned.
“So, about this guy....”
“Gabriel” I said his name, and goosebumps popped up on my arms. I rubbed the skin and willed them away.
“Did you go see him?”
“I went to, but Elle was there. They were talking, I don't know what about. She hugged him, and I ran. It was like prom night all over again, except this time I didn't have the right to be the one who was hurt.”
Serena bit her lip and walked over to me. “I'm sorry. Boys are dumb sometimes.”
“He came over, after class. He told me he was addicted to me, and that he couldn't give me up. What kind of guy says those things?”
Serena's eyes widened and a smile replaced the concerned frown. “He said that?”
“Yeah.”
“Guys don't generally speak like that.”
