The ER is not fun. Neither is tripping over a skateboard while holding a bowl of ice cream. Meaning, I didn't fall the normal way. Only I would fail to notice a skateboard by the freezer when I went to grab the hidden tin of cookie dough ice cream Grandma Louise made. Me being the pig that I am, opened the packet first, while reaching to get a spoon, not realizing the damn skateboard was there. You can guess what happened afterwards.

So no, the ER is not pleasant. Especially with an overbearing, helicopter mother who refuses to let us out of her sight for longer than an hour. And when she's an AP at your school.

"Really Taylor, I don't see how you didn't notice the skateboard." Mom glared at me through her wire-rimmed glasses. "After all, it's not like you're blind to objects. And to break Tanner's board... you know better sweetie." She ranted on and on, not noticing my eyes glazed over in boredom.

Until she said "...And you can't continue track anymore. How on earth will you get that scholarship?". My heart stopped. Track was my life. The only thing that made me happy. Not even Evan, my ex, was as pleasant as racing across a field.

"What do you mean, no track? The scout's gonna be there in 3 meets!" I whined. "Mom, I need to play otherwise I'll be a bum at home."

"How is that anything new?" sniggered my twin, Tanner. I glared at him, wondering who on God's green earth could bear his presence for longer than 5 minutes. After all, it was his skateboard that's right now forcing me to get an ankle brace.

I ignored him and limped out of the room, headed towards the car, Mom following suit. "By the way mom, can we stop by Zumiez? I need to ask the cost for repairs." Tanner asked, throwing a side glance at me. I just ignored him and threw open the side door.

My phone started vibrating in my pocket. I pulled it out, checked the caller ID and promptly stuck it back. Tanner looked at my facial expression and pulled his hands into fists. "Evan, right?"

I swallowed the lump in my throat and nodded. Tanner's mouth tightened. "If I see that punk-ass, I'll ruin him." Mom couldn't even yell at his obscene language, just locking her gaze at the road ahead. Tanner quickly mumbled an apology to mom, avoiding losing his phone for the week. After all, he needed it to talk with Sam. My best friend, and his girlfriend.

We sat in silence until Mom pulled up at the mall. "2 hours, that's it. Meet me at the food court at 12." She parroted to us as we headed inside. Mom took an immediate swerve towards Macy's, leaving me with Tanner.

We both shared a look, knowing that she'd end up in the cooking aisle, admiring the cutlery and plates. I looked at the time, noticing that in 5 minutes, Sam's shift at American Eagle would be over. I walked-limped over there, not fully getting used to the piece of black cloth, holding my ankle in place.

Unfortunately for me, my inner klutz loves to take control at the worst times, making me trip over my shoelaces and crash into something hard. Correction, someone's hard chest. I quickly pushed myself away and looked up, apology at the ready.

That's when a low voice rumbled " Where's the fire, sweetheart?"
