2003, 25th of July
I didn't know why I kept talking to Isaac after the snowball incident, since back then I wasn't interested in having deep friendships or being connected to people. But even ten years later, this event somehow lead us to becoming friends, best friends even. We were a small group: Isaac, Melody and me. It has always been the three of us since then.
I remember 25th of July being a warm day. The sun was shining mercilessly, birds were chirping. And of course, Isaac decided to do the most logical thing: Suggesting that we spend our lunch break at the schoolyard before the next lesson begins. Even weirder, he got Melody and me to agree to his suggestion, leading us to lean against the only big tree in the yard that didn't spend shade.
Due to the heat, none of us talked. There was absolute silence between the three of us, which I thought was nice for some time. Otherwise, Isaac was always the one talking about random stuff – even though sometimes it was annoying, I remember him telling me some fun stories from time to time.
Just as I was about to close my eyes in order to relax, Isaac sighed loudly, making it clear that he didn't like the silence.
"Adam, what is our next lesson?" he asked, obviously being bored and not caring about the topic anymore.
"Math," I yawned.
"Huh ... Math. I prefer chemistry. What's your next lesson, Melody?"
"My next lesson is biology, thank you," she mentioned, sounding rather disinterested while being concentrated on reading her book.
"I'll come pick you up at the usual spot so we can go home together," Isaac suggested. As a reply, his sister just nodded. Again, there was silence which Isaac tried to again break off.
"Melody?"
"Hmm?"
"Can you get me something to drink at the vending machine?"
Annoyed, Melody twitched with her eye for a moment, making it obvious that she hated to be disturbed while reading.
"Please?"
Now Isaac pleaded and smiled sheepishly at her, knowing that it would take a while for her to go and buy his drink. As far as I knew him, there was something that he wanted to talk to me about without hist sister knowing about it. I could tell because I've known him long enough.
Finally, Melody snap her book shut and stood up, leaving her book at the ground.
"What do you want to drink?"
"A bottle of water is fine. Thank you."
After he had sent her off, he took a quick glance at the book she was reading. Sarcasm could be heard in his voice as he scoffed at the book's title:
"A book about a wizard who falls in love. Can you believe it? She is still such a child, even at her age." He laughed, inspecting the cover of the book more closely.
"Well, I suppose for a girl her age that is normal," I assumed, thereby earning a sigh from Isaac.
"Adam, can I ask you something?"
Ah, there it goes. I knew something was up. Apparently, all this time he had been pondering about something important which explained why he had been so quiet up until now – which he usually wasn't.
"Sure."
"I plan on going on a world tour after graduating."
That was surprising. I raised my eyebrows, while crossing my arms.
