2005, 1st December

I had made a decision. A decision that would change my entire life, maybe abandoning everything that I had planned in the future up until now. Yet, it was the best compromise that I could find.

Ruth seemed overwhelmingly happy when I told her about my plan. She gave me the little red casket back that I had given her. What was contained in it, made me nervous, but at the same time, I felt like everything was going to turn out fine.

"Adam, I am so happy and grateful for you! I wish you the best of luck!!"

Behaving jittery like a girl in her teens, she gave me a thumbs up, one of her hands resting on her hip while doing so. Her eyes shined brightly. Laughing awkwardly, I quickly said goodbye, leaving the wooden house behind me with Ruth giggling happily in the back.

Only for today, I had taken a day off. I had this planned out carefully. My decision had been a rather spontaneous one the first time, but the more I had thought about it, the more it did make sense and I was determined to stick with it until the very end without backing down.

It was cold outside, since there was thick white snow all over the place. Kids were already building snowmen or starting snowball fights, while their parents scraped the ice off their car's front windows in the morning.

Like always, I went to the school to pick Melody up. Although today, I didn't arrive with my motorbike . To get where we were going to go it would only bother us. As soon as she saw that I would accompany her by foot, she started giggling:

"How unusual."

"Don't worry. We won't need it today."

Surprised, she looked at me, her light blue eyes widened:

"We?"

Then she examined me from the bottom up, only to realize that I didn't wear a suit as I usually did. Instead, I just wore a long black coat paired with a grey scarf hanging around my neck and black leather gloves on my hands to keep me warm.

I nodded, my tone implicating a question:

"Well, I hope you have time to spare?"

Adjusting her white bobble cap, she smiled gently:

"I do, actually. Where are we going?"

I just shrugged:

"You'll soon see."

"How mysterious.", she commented, patiently walking beside me on the sidewalk. After she politely declined my offer to carry her bag multiple times, I finally convinced her. Now, I carried her white bag that strongly resembled a bunny with all its plush surrounding it.

Melody smirked, suppressing her laughter with her hand in front of her mouth:

"That looks hilarious."

Grinning, I joked:

"Don't know what you mean. It perfectly fits my style."

Then again, there was silence – at least for a while. Until we reached the neraby forest at the end of the village behind their house. The sky turned a little bit darker when we arrived. Nonetheless, Melody followed me into the forest.

"I don't know where you are going to take me but knowing you, I assume that it's a place you frequented with Isaac.", she mumbled, while rubbing her hands and walking closely beside me due to the cold. She was probably scared that she would lose track of me in this thick forest since there was snow everywhere. Yet, she didn't say anything, keeping her thoughts and emotions to herself. Stomping through the snow left our footprints behind.
