Chapter 2: They're Real?!
They ran through corridors Rick barely able to keep up with Carrie. If they ran much more he would collapse. Just as he thought he would they came to a door flanked by what appeared to be two soldiers. He didn't recognize the uniforms they were wearing and the rifles they were holding looked strange. The barrels looked thicker than any rifle he had seen before and there didn't appear to be any trigger. The whole thing seemed to be made of metal but was white and it didn't look like it was painted on. The man on the left looked between him and Carrie and said, "Commander," in such a way that it was both a statement and question.
"He's with me," Carrie said placing her hand on a plate by the door. After a few seconds the door slid open and Carrie grabbed Rick's hand leading him inside. Inside looked like some sort of command center with people at various consoles. The consoles themselves looked like touchscreens and as he watched the layout on one changed. "What's the situation?" Carrie asked her voice a commanding one.
"We have two dragons attacking the base Commander," one woman said without looking up from her console.
"Show me," Carrie commanded. A video image appeared on the screen in front of the command center. It showed what was clearly two dragons. One looked like a Chinese dragon with it's long slender body and no wings. It had whiskers on it's snout and it's scales were sapphire blue. It had a gold fringe running from it's head to it's tail and ivory horns that looked like they belonged on a buck. The other dragon looked more like what most people think of when you say dragon. It's body was massive as were it's leathery wings which beat up and down allowing the dragon to fly. It's scales were emerald green with two rows of spikes of the same color running from it's head to it's tail. The green dragon opened it's mouth and it breathed fire at the base. Before it could hit anything though an electric blue light appeared in front of the fire and stopped it. The light lasted only as long as the dragon was breathing fire then it disappeared. The blue dragon open it's mouth but nothing came out. The blue light did appear again but it didn't look like it was blocking anything. "A fire and sonic dragon," Carrie muttered. She then raised her voice and asked, "Are there any more?"
"The scans only show the two dragons Commander," a guy said.
"When will the Guardians be here?" Carrie asked.
"I have Anna and Charlie on scanners," the man said. "They should be coming into view now." As they watched another dragon and what looked like a giant stag beetle appeared on the screen. The dragon was similar to the green dragon except that it's scales were the deepest black and it only had one row of blood red spikes along it's back and tail with four long spikes at the tip of it's tail. It also had two long blood red horns that swept back over it's head. The giant stag beetle had a metallic blue exoskeleton. The beetle landed on the blue dragon and began to try to cut it's head off. At least that was what it looked like. The green dragon was flying to help the blue dragon but the black dragon intercepted it and used it's tail like a club.
"I have weapon's discharge in section 7C," a second woman said.
"What's the nature of the weapon's discharge?" Carrie asked sounding worried.
"There are reports of at least one Were in the base," the woman said. "Seems like it's a Shiva Naga but they're having trouble seeing. They report a darkness which is confirmed by security cameras."
"According to the bio-readings several of the guards have been killed," a third woman said.
On the screen the green dragon breathed fire at the black dragon. The black dragon was engulfed in flame and was lost to sight until it's tail emerged from the flames and hit the green dragon over the head. The green dragon plummeted to the ground and the black dragon repeated the blow with the blue dragon. "Good thing Anna is a fire dragon," Carrie said smiling. "Make sure those Weres are captured. Rick and I will go to section 7C and see if we can capture the Weres in the base." She went over to a wall and opened a concealed panel. She took out what looked like a couple of pistols that looked like the rifles the guards had. She handed one to Rick saying, "The power cell is fully charged. To fire it just press the button with your thumb." Rick looked and saw that the button was on a little protuberance on the side. He followed Carrie out of the command center and to another elevator.
When they stepped out of the elevator the corridor was shrouded in shadow making it hard to see. Rick's heart was pounding as they made their way down the corridor straining his eyes and ears for any danger. His foot hit something and when he looked down he almost lost it as the shadows parted a little bit. There was the body of a young woman her throat ripped out violently and a gaping hole in her chest. Carrie looked down at the body and a tear rolled down her cheek. The shadows covered the body again and they continued. Neither of them spoke certain that if they did they would end up dead. After a few moments there was a very soft scraping sound coming from up ahead. Squinting Rick could just make out a shape that didn't look human. Carrie raised her pistol and fired. A small ball of blue-white light came out of the end and sped toward the shape. The shape had moved before Carrie fired and the ball missed it's target. Carrie fired three more times and each time she missed. It was obvious by her posture that she wasn't used to missing. She took a step forward and the hairs on the back of Rick's neck stood up. Without thinking he spun around and fired. To his surprise there was a ripple of blue-white light very close to him. He didn't even see the ball come out of his pistol just the ripple. The shadows parted and they were able to see again. On the floor by Rick's feet was what looked like a 3D shadow with white fangs in it's mouth. The fangs were stained with fresh blood but one could see that they were white. Carrie came over and looked down as a ripple went over the shadow. The fangs shrank and the shadow started becoming more solid and flesh toned. Soon a naked girl was laying where the shadow had been. She couldn't have been more than twelve and she looked like she was dead. "I... I... I killed her," Rick said falling to his knees in shock.
"She's not dead," Carrie said putting her hand on Rick's shoulder. "She's just unconscious. The E.D.s are calibrated to only cause unconsciousness in the target. They could be calibrated to kill but we rarely do that. We'd much rather have them alive so we can hopefully get information out of them."
Rick looked up at Carrie and asked, "She's not dead?" hardly daring to believe that the girl was still alive.
"No," Carrie said smiling. She looked at the girl and sighed. "She's too young to be a killer," she said shaking her head.
"Why is she naked?" Rick asked trying to process what just happened.
"I'll explain in my office," Carrie said. She put her hand up to her ear and then said, "Alright take her to a cell. We have another girl here that needs to be cuffed and taken to a cell." In a few moments two guards came up and put a couple bracelets and a collar on the girl. As they carried her away Carrie said, "Ok come with me to my office." As Rick rose and followed her he heard her mutter, "This is the second attack in as many days. It can't be a coincidence."
As they walked Rick thought about what he had seen. It appeared that dragons were real and even giant beetles. The word Weres had been said and he had to wonder if they had meant Werewolves but they couldn't be real. Or could they? If these things were real why didn't people know about them? What had he gotten himself in to by signing those forms?
