Chapter 3: Life Changes
Carrie stopped off at the command center to return the guns and to whisper instructions to a woman who looked to be about eighteen. Rick had to wonder what she whispered to her but decided not to ask. If she wanted him to know she would tell him. A few minutes later they were entering Carrie's office. It was pretty sparse with a mahogany desk with one chair behind it and two others in front and a few pictures hanging on one wall. There was a computer on the desk and a few photos of her family. The wall behind the desk was made entirely of glass. The view was one of the forest and Rick could see a lone deer grazing on the edge of the clearing. Carrie sighed upon seeing the deer and muttered, "Probably another Were seeing how the attack went." She then turned to Rick and said, "Sorry about that. When you've been here long enough you learn to be suspicious of any seemingly mundane animal for it could be a spy. Ordinarily I would have a scan done to determine if it was a Were but it seems like we already have a spy around here."
"What makes you think that?" Rick asked sitting down in one of the chairs.
Carrie sat down in her chair with a sigh. She seemed to be gathering her thoughts then said, "I'm going to trust you not to spread this around the base. This is the second attack in as many days. After the first attack we moved the base. The attack yesterday could have just been Weres finding the base but today's attack goes beyond coincidence if you ask me. Don't get me wrong it could be just a coincidence. A Were may have seen us come up and notified others though I don't think so. Two unauthorized Weres gained entrance to the base. This shouldn't have happened which leads me to suspect inside help thus we have a spy in our midst."
"So what are you going to do?" Rick asked taking another look out the wall. The deer was still there and seemed to be watching them which gave him the creeps.
"Well there's going to be an investigation of course," Carrie said looking pained. Rick hadn't seen her like this before. She did have a few moments where she wasn't as happy as she normally was in the past but this was new. "But we won't worry about that right now," she continued leaning back in her chair a bit. "I told you I would explain some things to you. Now I've mentioned Weres a number of times. The legend of the Werewolf is true to a certain extent. There are people who can turn into a wolf though they don't need the full moon to do so. Also their bite can't cause someone to become a Werewolf. A Werewolf keeps their mind when they transform so any who claim that they're not responsible for their actions while a wolf is lying. Now Werewolves aren't the only Weres in the world. A Were can be any type of animal either real or mythical. The exception are the Wereshadows which are neither animal or human. We don't know exactly what they are but they appear to be shadows. Physical attacks go right through them but they can solidify enough to affect physical objects and people. Now as to why the girl was naked. Weres, as you can imagine, have the ability to change their bodies. If they're wearing skin tight clothes those will change with them but other clothes don't. It's a common practice for Weres just to take off all their clothes before they transform so of course they're naked when they turn back. Do you understand?"
"Well yes but I have a couple of questions," Rick said looking Carrie in the eye. "Now since Weres are real does that mean things like vampires and witches are real too?"
Carrie smiled and said, "Yes they're real. So are fairies, dragons, elves, gnomes, leprechauns, and many others. I'm sure you're going to ask why no one notices them. Well for the most part they remain hidden and some even live in a universe that's next to ours. Those that are seen are usually mistaken for something else. You'd be surprised just how far someone's mind will go to come up with a reasonable explanation for what's outside their reality. For example if someone sees a dragon in flight they might convince themselves that they saw a flock of birds or a plane. Some could even convince themselves that they didn't see anything or just forget that they saw anything. Then we have the results of some clashes that need explaining. Most of the forest fires in California are the result of clashes between mythical beings. We have people that take the blame for starting the fires either on accident or on purpose."
