Elena's pov:
Today is draw day in New Orleans. Every time they have a new king they have what is basically a contest between 12 women all from 12 different towns to compete to become the queen of New Orleans. The women are all between ages of 18-21. Now that I'm 18 I'm eligible to be selected but it's very rare they go for the younger side of the range. I'd like to say I wouldn't get selected but you know what they say never say never.

On this day girls are meant to wear white dresses to symbolise innocence. As much as I thought this tradition was stupid and I hated it I obliged with the rules and I was wearing an off shoulder white dress that come down to my knees and white flats to match. I was gathered at my house with my brother Jeremy, my guardian Alaric, the Salvatore brothers Stefan and Damon, Matt, Tyler and my two bestfriends in the whole world; Bonnie and Caroline who were also wearing white dresses. I'm not a dress kind of girl but it is what it is. I've heard rumours in the past that women who didn't abide by the rules were killed. Oh and did I mention that none of us even knew who the King is. But it doesn't make a difference to me. I highly doubt I'm going to be one of the 12 selected women.

We all spent the day chatting and talking with each other at my house awaiting possible selection even though we all had high hopes it wouldn't happen until it did.

I heard helicopters fly over my house and a few moments later I heard over a speaker "Elena Gilbert. Please come out of the house or we will have no choice but to force our way in!"

Could it be? Had I really been chosen on draw day. This wasn't happening! I can't say goodbye to my friends and family. I didn't want to.. and what about school I was so close to graduating.

I left the house with everyone following behind me. I saw guards waiting in their uniforms and there was cameras everywhere, flashing pictures and filming every second. I said my goodbyes and hugged everyone before walking over to the guards. They lead me back to where they had landed the helicopters as we all got in. My friends had followed us over there so I waved goodbye to them one last time as we took off, and there it was I was sat in the back of a helicopter being flown over to New Orleans for draw day.

What happens if I don't win?
Will they kill me?
Will I ever see my friends and family again?
Who is the King?
What if I do win?

All these questions and more flooded my mind the whole flight there.
