Chapter Fourteen:
Hot As Fuck
.・。.・゜✭・.・✫・゜・。.Ramona huffed, tying her hair back into a ponytail. She leaned on the counter, fanning her face with her hand as beads of sweat formed on here forehead. The short-sleeve button up shirt she wore clung to her skin, showing off the scars littering her upper arm from the bite. "Hace demasiado calor."
The summer was blisteringly hot, especially since her new job's air conditioning had gone out. Ramona was indeed right. She had in fact been fired from Jet City. But she was determined to enter her senior year with a little of her own money in her pocket, so, naturally, she went job hunting with Steve. He tried to convince her to work at Scoops Ahoy with him, but they only needed two positions and a girl named Robin already had the job. Steve was more than a little disappointed when he found out they wouldn't be working together, but he covered it up by faking being relieved. Ramona scoffed, punching him on the shoulder when he did this.
It ended up working out, in a way. Because she ended up getting a job at the coffee shop, Lava Java across from Scoops Ahoy. Steve, without fail, came in every single day and ordered the same exact coffee order. Their root-beer float special. He always had the same shit eating grin on his face as he sauntered into the store wearing that sailors uniform, all the confidence in the world radiating off of him as he leaned on the counter and sent her a grin.
Ramona would always roll her eyes as she looked down at him, usually stealing his hat and wearing it while she made the coffee. Whenever she did that her fingers would always brush across his temples as she pulled the hat from his head. She'd stick her tongue out and call him an idiota.
"Here's your coffee, Nance." Ramona grinned, handing her friend the coffee.
Nancy's grinned, taking the cup from her hands and taking a large gulp from the cup. "You're a life saver!"
"Just doin' my job." Ramona shrugged with a laugh, "I've missed you, you've been too busy with Jonathan to hang out with me."
Nancy blushed looking away from Ramona's gaze, "Yeah, I've missed you too. I'm free this weekend."
"Saturday?" Ramona suggested, "I'm busy Friday."
"Saturday sounds good. " Nancy smiled, "See you then."
Ramona nodded, waving to the girl as she left the coffee shop. A sigh left Ramona's tinted lips as she looked over at the clock on the wall. One hour left until she could leave the shop and bother Robin and Steve.

"So then I was like.. What the fuck? Right, and-" Ramona's sentence was cut short as repetitive ringing filled her ears. Ramona huffed, letting her shoulders drop as she readjusted Steve's hat on her head.
"Hey, dingus! Your children are here!" Robin's voice filled her ears as she blew hair out of her face. Steve rolled his eyes, standing from the chair and sliding open the window door.
"Again? Seriously?" Ramona chuckled as Steve rolled his eyes and allowed them to pass through the back ways connecting the shops together.
"I swear if anyone hears about this-" Steve started before the group of kids cut him off.
"We know, we're dead!" Their voices echoed throughout the empty hallway.
"You're gonna get fired one day, Steve." Ramona grinned, pulling the spoon from her lips and pointing at him with it as he closed the door. "Then I'm only gonna be able to bother Robin."
Steve shook his head with a shrug as he reached up and plucked the hat from her head, causing the girl to protest and smack his hands away.Steve laughed as he adjusted it on his head and sent her a teasing grin, "I have to work, just eat your ice cream."
"I have to work, just eat your ice cream." Ramona mimicked, stirring the mostly melted ice cream with her spoon. Steve rolled his eyes as he left the break room.
Ramona began to subtly sway to the music playing in the ice cream shop. The working air conditioning felt amazing against her skin as she lifted her face towards the vent. A silent contented sigh left her lips.
"That's weird." Steve commented, causing Ramona to open her eyes. She knitted her eyebrows together in confusion as the room became pitch black. She place her ice cream beside her as she slid of the table she sat on.
"What's going on?" Ramona asked, sliding the window door open and leaning on the ledge. "Why's the power out?"
Ramona blinked, furrowing her eyebrows as Steve flipped the light switch on and off. Robin rolled her eyes, sharing a look with Ramona as Steve continued to flip the switch. "That isn't gonna work, dingus."
"Oh, really?" Steve challenged, raising his eyebrows as he aggressively flipped the switch up and down. Ramona rolled her eyes, shaking her head in disappointment.
"Really." Ramona sent him a grin as he rolled his eyes.
"Don't be scared, it's only the dark." Steve snickered as Ramona shot him a warning look.
"Cállate la boca." Ramona snapped, flipping the boy off, "I'll make you pay extra for coffee."
"Whatever, you like me too much to do that." Steve sent her a wink as he leaned on the wall.
Ramona fake gagged as she turned back towards the ice cream, "Para de coquetear."
"No estoy coqueteando!" Ramona snapped, the tips of her ears reddening as she looked away from Robin's prying eyes.
"Ramona.. You know I hate it when you speak so I can't understand you." Steve whined.
"Learn Spanish." Ramona said, with a grin, straightening her back and shutting the window door as the lights turned back on. Ramona let out a sigh of relief as she felt the air conditioning turn back.
"Let there be light." Ramona could hear the smugness in Steve's voice. Ramona rolled her eyes as she seated herself back on the table and continued to eat her soupy ice cream.
The music began playing over her head again as she let her eyes flutter shut. She rested her head against the back wall and drummed her fingers against her thigh as she waited for Steve's shift to finish so they could hang out.
"Steve!" She shouted, kicking her feet back and forth.
"What?" He called back, muffled from the wall separating them.
"I'm hungry!" She called back, "Can we get something to eat after your done?"
Ramona paused, waiting for a response as she leaned her elbows on her knees and stared down at her bright red converse. She quietly hummed to herself and brushed her fingers across the scars. Sometimes she could still feel the pain of the teeth sinking into her arm.
A sigh left her lips and she jumped at the sound of the door opening. Steve stood there, wiping his hands on his pants as he sent her a smile. "Alright, I'm done. Where do you wanna go?"
