The day of departure arrived quite quickly. Everyone was too busy to come and say goodbye to Ezequiel. He wasn't offended, on the contrary. He didn't particularly like crowds and preferred calm and well-oiled everyday life. If angels had gathered around him curious instead of doing their job he would have wanted to disappear as quickly as possible embarrassed.
Ezequiel's mission had been treated with more discretion than usual, which had piqued his friend's curiosity. No one seemed aware of the young angel's departure and he himself was unaware of the mission he was going to have to accomplish. Ezequiel had to admit it was intriguing, but he didn't mind. On the contrary, he could climb on the platform of the portal in a pleasant silence and serenity.
Ezequiel took one last look at the pristine white walls of the room before closing his eyes. A deep voice asked if he was ready and Ezequiel nodded. The next second his head fogged up and for a short moment he felt like every cell in his body was swelling up with water before relaxing again with a sigh. The first thing Ezequiel felt was the difference in the air he was breathing. He took a few deep breaths before opening his eyes. He was in the middle of the same type of portal he had climbed up there but the walls had changed. They were no longer a pristine white but an off-white.
Two angels were stationed at his side informed of his arrival. A woman and a man. The latter held in his hands a document which was to contain information about Ezequiel. He wondered what could possibly be written in this document. Certainly not much. Simply his name, the time of his arrival and his destination.
The woman gave Ezequiel a beaming smile.
"Did you have a good trip?"
Ezequiel looked at her for a moment before responding with a nod. The two angels moved away from the portal to let Ezequiel come down. His body quickly returned to normal and he no longer felt the effects of the teleportation. Ezequiel's every move was watched by the two strangers. The man said:
"Some people experience difficulty breathing or nausea after teleportation. If you ever feel disy, let us know.
-I'm fine."
He nodded in satisfaction before glancing at the nearly blank document.
"Welcome to planet Earth."
Ezequiel smiled weakly then he was signaled to follow them out of the room. Earthly clothes were handed to him and he changed on the spot so as not to be noticed by the locals. The rest of his things were waiting for him in his temporary apartment where the two angels were going to escort him. Ezequiel got in the back of a so called car and didn't think of buckling up so the female angel reminded him. Ezequiel looked around puzzled before finding what he had learned to be the seat belt. He plugged it in with no problem and the car started up.
On the way Ezequiel looked calmly out the window without saying a word. Even though he had seen many photos, the Earth was different in real life. Everything seemed more colorful and at the same time dirtier. He could smell the pollution of the city he hadn't got used to yet.
The car passed by a large number of terrestrials who walked without conviction or on the contrary determined. Ezequiel was surprised at how real the terrestrials looked from up close. They looked like characters from a book coming to life. There was not much of a difference between angels and humans at first glance. They all had two eyes, two arms, a nose ... The difference was visible when you looked more closely at their accoutrements or their expressions. The eyes were a reflection of the soul and it was amazing how much we could identify a person by looking them in the eye.
Ezequiel did not understand humans. Some were racists, they killed each other ... They said they were different when in his eyes they all looked alike. Certainly small details were different, but you had to look far too closely to notice them.
