Melisa’s POV:

When I entered Shayla’s house, I could almost hear her little brother whining for some ice cream, but, good old Shayla forced him to eat some carrots and a sandwich before giving him an ice cream sandwich.

“I can’t believe you just had a date with a sophomore! Well I think he’s a sophomore, it’s between a sophomore and a junior…” She droned on after we entered her room, when her parents came home.

“Correction, they were sophomores, not juniors. We skip juniors, remember?” I asked her as I raised a glass of milk up to my face and sipped it.

She shuddered when I sipped the milk; she hates the sound of it with a passion. Then she took a seat next to me onto her bed.

“Well at least that’s over with, but there’s still more bumps in the road yet to come,” she smiled sympathetically, knowing how much I don’t want to go home and get beat up by my dad.

“Ugh, I hate that guy,” I said as the memories started flashing through my head of being abused.

“Why don’t you sue against him? He’ll at least have to pay for the damage he’s done,” she suggested with wide eyes.

“He’d kill me first,” I said as I balanced a pencil on the bridge of my nose, contemplating when to face my dad.

“Tell me again why he beats you up.”

“Because he’s drunk when he does that,” I replied quickly and flopped backwards onto a pillow, letting slumber take over me as I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

“Let’s hope he’s sober tomorrow,” I said before drifting off to sleep.

When I woke up in the morning I realized that Keaton was nicer to me than Collin was, but then again he was a nice guy before that whole scene with that cheerleader…ugh!

“I thought it was in here!” Shayla whisper yelled, exasperated.

“Thought what was in where?”

“My mom gave me an iPhone from last Christmas and now I can’t find it!” She groaned desperately.

“So why did you need to wake me up for this?” I asked groggily, still sleepy, and put my head back down onto the comfortable pillow.

As soon as my head hit the pillow I realized that we’re going to miss school!

“OMG! Stop looking for your phone and find your backpack lady!” I yelled at her as I stood up and grabbed an outfit out of her closet.

“Why?” she asked dumbly looking at me with confused eyes.

“School, remember?” I jogged her mind.

“OMG! We’re late!” she yelled as she quickly dressed into a yellow and black polka-dot tank top with a black mini skirt that had a gold chain around its waist.

“Duh,” I said as I grabbed my backpack from off of her lounge chair.

She quickly took one last look in the mirror before tugging me out of her room towards our school.
