Melisa’s POV:
After Shayla and Sean had left the room, I felt sick to my stomach. Is Shayla going to be alright?
Shayla has never fainted before, so it’s quite a surprise that she did. My initial thought was that she was doing it just so she could get attention.
Suddenly, a burst of laughter echoed throughout the hallway, which sounded into our room since Mrs. Guanzini had left the door open. I longed to be by Shayla’s side, helping her to the nurse’s office, instead of hunky Sean helping her.
I almost laughed when I called Sean hunky. Of course he has a muscular build and all the hot stuff that goes along with that, but I couldn’t picture him trying to talk to a popular girl at all.
Mrs. Guanzini cleared her throat as she closed the door with a meaningful look on her face.
“Anyone have an idea of whose laughter that was?” She asked the class with a little smirk on her face.
I gulped, if I said it was like Shayla’s then what would she do? Would she phone the office and start a search party? Or would she just ask if I could go and find her to bring her back to class?
No one in the class answered, not even me. I was too scared to even suggest Shayla to the teacher that happened to be Shayla’s aunt.
“No one has an answer?” She countered the class room for any last minute suggestions.
I silently prayed that she didn’t know what Shayla’s laugh sounded like, or Shayla would force me to swim 30 laps later in the school’s pool.
“Okay then,” She finally said. “Let’s go onto what we’ll be reading about this semester, Pride and Prejudice.”
Internally I yelled out Victory! Shayla’s going to love Pride and Prejudice!
As soon as the school bell rang, signaling the end of Second day of High School, I sprang to my feet and ran toward Shayla’s locker, only to be stopped by the Principal ten feet away from her locker.
“Melisa Ramirez, your dad wants you home tonight,” He said with a nasal voice.
I nodded to him and politely said thank you, but my insides were screaming as I walked to Shayla with a perplexed face.
Shayla automatically knew what was happening and gave me a hug when I neared her.
“Wish you luck,” She whispered into my ear as Collin walked up to us.
“You need to come to my party tonight,” Collin said with a firm voice as if it was not an option.
“I wish,” I muttered as I walked right on past him, through the double doors our school has.
I heard Collin turn to Shayla and ask, “What’s up with her?”
Shayla replied, “She has to go home to her ‘father’.”
I shuddered when I heard that word. How can anyone be so demanding and harsh while drunk?
I walked past the buses to the twin home complex a couple of blocks downtown, and on the way there I passed my dad’s favorite hangout… the bar.
My footsteps echoed on the cement as my mind counted the steps as if it was a death penalty. Could anything be worse than this? Going to my dad’s house when there is nothing to hope for unless it was that he found something to pass his time while I’m gone? Now that would be something.
Forty-five, forty-six, forty-seven…
The town houses got richer and richer as I walked past them, two blocks down one more to go.
