Spencer, after an icy shower and grabbing his duvet from the living room, decided that JJ was right. He was a hermit. And he proved so by staying in his room until morning. His mom and Daniel didn't come home until around eleven and by the universe's good grace, they did not check on either teen. Spencer turned his music up high on his headphones and played virtual chess on his computer until two AM. Then he decided to sulk in his bed the remainder of the night.
It never happened, he reassured himself. It was all a fever dream and nothing will be weird at school.
Texting Kevin to pick him up a whole twenty minutes earlier than usual for school was not a way to chicken out of seeing JJ at the breakfast table. He just... needed to go to the library first thing. Yeah. Luckily for him, Kevin already had two Redbulls and wanted to play the new Borderlands game.
The sound of his thumping heart lulled Spencer to sleep for an hour or two then he woke up just before his alarm. He tactfully shut off the alarm and stalked around his room to get dressed. Why the hell was he so anxious? There's no way she'd be up right now anyway.
His knuckles turned white as he gripped his dresser. Inhale 123, exhale 456. Nothing was going to happen. They'd get to school and she and all her Barbie doll friends wouldn't even send a glance his way. No one knew what happened. No one will.
With a final breath, he stepped away from his dresser and tripped over his computer chair, catching himself on his bed. He was simultaneously enraged and relieved at the distracting pain.
He picked himself up, grabbed two different socks, and slipped on his converses. He stood in front of his door, backpack in hand. This mission requires stealth, he could almost hear Kevin say. He gripped the doorknob and swung it open, his purple flannel billowing behind him.
There stood his arch-nemesis, a soft golden sundress flowing around her curves and stopping around mid-thigh. That, with her cerulean scrunchie, accentuated her lightly tanned skin and made her positively glow.
"Earth to Dweeb," JJ teased, clearly annoyed. She stood in the doorway with her arms crossed against her chest.
Spencer cleared his throat, "What was that?"
JJ rolled her eyes, "I said, what are you doing? You don't get up until the last minute usually."
"What do you care?" he muttered and lunged for the bathroom. He shut the door behind him. He realized he was shaking when he grabbed his toothbrush. He sighed, put some paste on the brush and stuck it in his mouth. He went over every tooth once, twice, almost three before spitting. He racked his hands through his hair a few times for good measure and smoothed down his faded Green Day shirt. Second day of hell, here I come.
Kevin Lynch pulled up to the Jareau Residence to pick up the on;y Reid in Quantico, Virginia. Instead of the twenty minutes he promised it was more like fifteen since he grabbed a couple of breakfast sandwiches and a coffee for Spencer. He had the windows down and Breakbot playing, still half asleep and eating his breakfast, when Spencer stormed out of the sidedoor.
"Aye, it's the main man himself," Kevin said around a mouth full of food. Spencer plopped himself and his bag in the seat and grabbed his coffee from the cupholder.
"You're an angel sent from heaven," Spencer said as he took off the lid and nearly downed the caffeinated liquid.
"Woah, dude, what the hell happened last night?"
