Strangely enough, when both of the teens made it home that day, both parents were also present, i.e. Diana wasn't sleeping and Dan wasn't... doing God knows what on his days off. They were both at the dining room table, looking like mob bosses about to make an offer the teens couldn't refuse.
"Ah, look what the cat dragged in," Dan rumbled with a wide smile. His voice was so deep it traveled throughout the house without him trying. "Why don't you two take a seat?" He gestured to the two empty chairs at the round table.
The panic nearly made Spencer's knees give out from under him. They couldn't have known. There was absolutely no way. They would be freaking out instead of calling a family meeting. What would happen if they found out? Would we be arrested? Would I be arrested? Would they send me away? What if she-
The sound of a chair scraping on the floor broke him out of his downward spiral of worries. JJ sat down adjacent to his mom, leaving the chair closest to the door for him. He caught her eye for only a moment but he saw the same fear reflected in her blue orbs. He sat down quickly on the edge of the seat and bobbed his leg up and down.
"Relax you two. You're making me nervous," Dan muttered then laughed through his nose. He turned to Spencer. "First thing's first: happy birthday, Son," he gave the young man a genuine smile. "Hopefully the next thing makes your birthday even better!"
The panic was replaced by dread. Dan's surprises were rarely good news to anyone except for him. Spencer gave his step-dad an expectant look.
"Remember when you were a part of that cub scout troop a while back and you got strep throat so you couldn't go on that camping trip?" Spencer nearly flinched from the memory. He knew faking that cough would bite him in the ass one day. Karma was one cold, cold bitch.
He wasn't the only one who lied. Spencer looked to his mother across the table, his eyes imploring. She looked just as resistant to Dan's impending scheme.
"So, I decided to call up my old buddy Mark, since he has a cabin out in the mountains just outside of town, and called in a favor." He seemed damn proud of himself. "What d'ya say, Sport? One last chance to be a kid before you go off to college?"
He was trying. He really was trying and Spencer saw that. It was just unfortunate that whenever Dan tried to bond, Spencer preferred doing literally anything else over whatever Dan had planned.
"Um, actually, Dan-"
"Great! We leave Friday. I'm even pulling you from school early. Or take the day off, either way is fine. Thought I'd give you both the week to prepare."
JJ raised her head, "Both?"
"Uh, yeah," Dan drawled as if it were obvious. "This is a family trip, JJ. Ain't that right, Diana?" Spencer's mom forced a smile for her husband.
"It certainly will be... an interesting experience," she said to her children.
"It'll be an adventure." Dan stood. "It'll build character, make you stronger and if you ever get stranded, you'll know what to do." Dan patted Spencer on the back and started heading towards his office.
"Dad, it's Halloween weekend," JJ protested.
"And Comic Con weekend," Spencer mumbled sadly.
"Oh, God forbid you kids miss a couple parties and... whatever a Comic Con is. Before ya know it, I'm gonna have an empty nest." Dan stopped himself from saying anymore and strode right into his office and shut the door. Diana sighed.
