...JJ rounded the corner. As soon as she saw the surprised young man, her face crumpled. She moved towards him with arms wide open and a heart-wrenching sob.
"JJ?" he asked, concern and a brotherly protectiveness taking over. He hugged her tightly. "What's wrong?"
She held back just as tight and took a few steady breaths to calm the tears. With a croaky voice, she said:
"I'm sorry."
---
"Sorry? For what?" Aaron asked. JJ pulled back.
"I dunno, I just always come to you crying about..." she couldn't force out the words she wanted to say.
"What did he do this time?" Her lips trembled.
"He broke up with me," she wailed. Aaron and Emily exchanged mutual looks of surprise.
"Reid? You mean, Spencer Reid dumped you?" JJ gave him a watery glare. "Wow."
"Gee, thanks," she scorned.
"And you're crying..." he continued. "But it isn't really about this, is it?"
JJ looked down at her moccasins and started fidgeting with her necklace. "I had a bad dream," she put simply. Understanding dawned on Aaron's face.
"Did you want to see a counselor?" he lowered his voice further.
"Are you crazy? What if someone saw me?" JJ whispered harshly.
"Since when do you care what people think?"
"Since the fifth grade when..." JJ looked over at Emily who was trying to quietly sneak past them.
"I'm, um, just gonna go to class," Emily waved and headed towards the stairs.
"See ya," Aaron called after her. She didn't reply.
Emily wasn't sure what exactly they were talking about towards the end but she knew it probably wasn't her business. It was hard to imagine that Reid had actually broken up with JJ. Granted, teenage relationships were usually messy and almost never worked out. To be young and in-love was a reckless combination.
She couldn't stop the memories of her time with Ian back in France. They were so alike, so attuned with each other. It was a shame that he always managed to be a part of the wrong crowd. He was naturally a rebel, a leader of the revolution, be that from his Irish heritage or his French patronage. He was so consumed in his cause that their break-up barely fazed him.
She sighed as she walked through the halls. It was good to be in the States.
Speaking of states, Emily had barely made it to her history class when the bell rang. As usual, Mr. Rossi wasn't even in the room until five minutes after class was supposed to start. It was his AP class and he was pretty lenient compared to others except for the five page essays due every Monday.
When he finally strolled into the room, he went directly to his plan book. The class was silent as they waited for the assignment for the period.
"Oh, I see," he said, more to himself. He looked up at the class. "Seems we've reached a documentary I wanted to show you," he pulled out a DVD case out from one of his draws. This received a positive-neutral reaction from the class.
And the neutral part of it was the kids already sleeping or staring into space. Strangely enough, Spencer next to her was the latter. When the lights were shut off, Emily turned to her friend with concern.
