Lucifer picked some invisible lint off his suit for several moments before focusing back on Katie. She wanted to shake him and scream at him to get on with it, but she refrained—and that task wasn't easy. What was he trying to prove? Lucifer sniffed.

"What do you know about Lilith?"

Katie pushed her eyebrows together. "Who is she? A girl in my class?"

Lucifer chuckled. "No, she's definitely not a girl in your class. Lilith is sometimes referred to as Adam's first wife. Does that ring any bells?"

Her confusion deepened. "Adam who?"

"Adam of Adam and Eve."

It took Katie a second, but she finally realized who he was talking about. "Oh, yeah. I know about Adam, but I've never heard of Lilith."

"That will probably make things easier. I can tell you the real story and not the myth." He cleared his throat. "Adam and Lilith knew each other, but they weren't ever married. Let me start at the beginning."

Katie leaned forward in her chair in anticipation of the story. As Lucifer spoke, she imagined the story in her mind.

Before humanity was created, long before the Man Upstairs commanded that there be light, the world was bathed in darkness. Humans always assumed that it was also devoid of life, but that wasn't true. They're pretty narrow-minded and believe that they are the center of life and that there's no possibility that anything else could have been created, but there was. There just wasn't anyone around to record that fact. Life existed in the darkness. Beings that were created from anger and hate. They were the embodiment of wrath and vengeance that existed long before forgiveness. If you've read the Bible, which is mostly a true account of what happened, with a few author liberties taken, you know that the Creator had moments of being vengeful and full of wrath. That's what the first half of the book talks about. And that's fairly tame from what He used to be. At that point, He was getting His emotions under control.

Humans want to believe that He is light and love, which is true, but they seem to forget that He is also all the other emotions as well. None of them would exist without being created by Him. But I'm off topic. Let's get back to Lilith.

The creatures were twisted and mean, but they weren't shunned. They were favored as beings on Earth, equals to the angels that lived in Heaven—siblings in a way. The mother of these creatures, the first of the dark kind to be created, was Lilith. She had been created to be a Divine companion, but before she could prove her worth, she was cast out of Heaven and into the darkness. While she wasn't abandoned or despised, her banishment was never explained. Perhaps it was always her destiny to rule the darkness. Lilith didn't know, but she wanted to know. She wanted to be let back into Heaven. She wanted to regain favor. As time went on, her bitterness and resentment grew stronger. She missed Heaven and found that the demons that were created after her were lacking, so she created beings in her own image. It helped stave off the loneliness. She molded and sculpted them, nurtured and showed them how to exist in the world.

When light found its way to Earth, the creatures didn't disappear, they were just forced into the shadows and underground. Then Adam was created. He was modeled after the angels and quickly became the favorite in the Divine's eyes. At first, the dark creatures didn't care. There was enough room in the world for all of them to exist. Adam had his world, they had theirs, and they never intersected. Even when He turned His back on the darkness, the creatures continued to live and thrive.

But Lilith couldn't help but feel betrayed. When Adam came to the world and she was forced even deeper into darkness, all hope of regaining favor was lost. She couldn't compete with such perfection, such beauty. Yet, she had a deep-seated desire to make sure Adam had the necessary skills to survive in the world and a burning curiosity to know him. She often concealed herself in the Garden to watch him, afraid to approach. She was sure her being there wasn't allowed. After all, the Garden had been walled off from the world and the creatures were purposely placed on the outside. She had experienced His wrath before, seen creatures destroyed for disobeying His will, and she didn't want that to happen to her.
