One minute of my hour had passed. I still had 59 minutes to make it to the hospital and back. I didn’t want to put my brother in that position, but what other choice did I have? T-Bag would have killed the only living family I had if I’d refused. I couldn’t take that chance. I had to stay with T-Bag to keep my brother alive.

“Just hang on, Brandon. You’re gonna live. I won’t let you die.” I said, looking over at him

“Jenn.. Jenna.” Brandon stuttered weakly

“Shhh, no. Don’t try to talk now, Brandon. Just stay with me. Keep your eyes open. I can’t have you leave me too. I’ll play his game, just to keep you safe.” I said, my eyes tearing up as I pull into the hospital parking lot

“Oh, my. Get him in. Sir, what’s your name? Sir, can you hear me?” A nurse asked

“His name is Brandon Peters. I’m his sister.” I said, trying not to cry as the doctors wheel him into emergency

“Miss Peters, go home and rest. We’ll call you once we hear anything.”

I had felt my phone buzzing. I had gone outside before answering

“Hello?”

“Tick-tock, Precious. How’s the boy?” T-Bag asked

“As if you care. He wouldn’t have had to be in the hospital if you hadn’t impaled him. Look, I was just about to make my way back, just like you asked, T-Bag.” I said

“Let’s hope you do, Jenna.” T-Bag said chuckling

“I already said I’d come back. You made me swear on my brother that I would come back.” I said hanging up

T-Bag had tapped the cold bars of his cell humming to himself as I had climbed up the stairs toward T-Bag’s cell. He had suddenly jumped up, looking like an eager child on Christmas. He had coiled his arm around me, pressing his lips to the side of my head as I grab him by the collar of his shirt looking him in the eye glaring at him angrily as he throws you onto his bed, pinning you down to the mattress.

“I had my doubts at first, but you swore on your brother, which proves you can be loyal.” T-Bag said, stroking my hair

“I’ll do what I have to in order to protect Brandon.” I said, flipping T-Bag onto his back

“Look at what I found, Jenna.” T-Bag said, slipping the ring on my finger

“How..? I got rid of it.” I said

“I found it on the floor of my car, and I swallowed it and the ring passed through, just waiting for you to come back to me.” T-Bag said, placing his hand on my wrist locking my fingers in his as he played with the glistening ring on my finger

“Oh, my..” I said, nearly gagging

“No, I rinsed it as soon as it passed.” T-Bag said

“This is the only way to keep Brandon out of harm’s way.”

“We settle down, and your brother will be left alone.”

“I don’t have any other choice.”

“Either spend the remainder of your days with me, or Brandon Peters will end up in the obituaries.”

A FEW WEEKS LATER

“You and me out on the road, starting our lives anew.” T-Bag said, looking at me in the passengers seat

“Yeah, Brandon’s out of the hospital for your little stunt. I can’t believe that I had to leave him behind.”

“You and I were made for each other, Precious. Coming with me was the only way to protect him. That is what you wanted, isn’t it? Your brother to be kept out of harm’s way?” T-Bag asked
