Chapter 3

LUCA'S POV  <3

As Ella pulled away, the only thing I could focus on was Ember's face. The look of disgust and pain that I saw on her face made my heartbreak but I knew it was reasonable for her to feel that way. I just needed a chance to explain this to her.

Ella and I had been dating for just over two years. We both knew we had mates we haven't found yet, but we had formed a deep connection and friendship and had taken a liking to each other soon. We knew we'd have to leave each other as soon as one of us found our mate. Time seemed to slow down as Ella turned my face towards her and Ember walked away from us at the same time.

"Where have you been? I was worried. Even Nic wasn't sure where you'd run off to." Ella said.

I dragged my eyes away from Ember's retreating back and looked into Ella's hazel eyes and took a deep breath.

"I found my mate, Ella. Where's Nic? I need him. I can't believe this. I finally found her." I gushed.

Ella's face fell with disappointment and I realized how insensitive I must have seemed. Ella was my girlfriend, sure, but before that, we'd been friends since we had been kids and we always shared our thoughts and secrets with each other. I had acted like a noob in the heat of the moment.

"Umm.. he's in the washroom. Are you sure Luca? Where is she?" Ella whispered.

I looked up in despair, knowing that ember had probably left. I know I would have if I'd been in her place.

"She was standing right here when you came over and..."

"Oh my!" Ella gasped, "I kissed you right in front of her, didn't I? Was it that dark-haired girl?"

I nodded my head and pulled Ella closed and kissed her forehead.

"It's fine El, you didn't know. You still are my girlfriend."

"Not for long though." She looked at me, her eyes watering.

I chose not to say anything as I knew she was right and instead held her hand and walked her towards the secluded booth we'd booked.

"Okay so tell me all about her!" El forced a smile at her best to be enthusiastic for me, despite the fact that it meant that we would no longer be together.

"I saw her outside the club, waiting in line. I felt this strange fluttering in my heart. I wondered why and then i saw her sitting at the bar and went to speak to her, to see if i knew her or if I'd met her at any of the pack meetings...I just felt drawn to her. And when i sat to speak to her, her eyes turned yellow. That's when I knew El. She's the one. She has such beautiful eyes-"

I stopped my rambling to blush and look at El. I was sure she'd understand. There was nothing we could do.

She leaned forward and gave me a hug.

"I get it. Friends." She extended her palm to me.

Despite the fact that I had loved Ella in my own way, I was glad to have found Ember. Glad that Ella wasn't going to make a big deal about this and ruin the friendship we had.

I feel a body bump into my side, jostling me into the table in front of me.

"HELLO BROTHER!" Nic settled into the seat beside me and unceremoniously started chomping on the cold fries left on the table.

Ella leaned over my shoulder and winked at Nic.

"He found the luna." And smirked.

Nicoli's eyes widened and he looked at me inquisitively. I nodded my head at him. He knew how important this was going to be for our pack.

For the past five centuries, our pack had been cursed. For the sin of our ancestor who had slain an entire pack except for the luna and her beta's mate, the Artemis pack, with the help of a traitor from that pack, the wolves of our pack could never shift. The curse was destined to be broken when the luna of the pack would be from the Artemis pack. Our forefathers had attempted to marry and mate women from the Artemis pack even though they hadn't been their true mates and it had resulted in sterile offsprings and the curse remaining intact. No one knew which alpha was destined to free the pack.

I had been brought up to defend the pack and be more loyal to it than most alphas as not only was my pack weakened by the fact that we could not shift into our wolves but also as the other packs were constantly trying to take us down.

"Nic. We have to find her. "

Nic's eyes gleamed and he smirked.

"Yes, we do. We need our luna." He nods.
