Author's POV
March 23, 2002
He checked to see if the coast is clear peeking out the corner of the building while holding his little sister's hand. Once it's clear he had to act fast to save her. He will not be with her for a long time, but the only thing that matters is her sister is safe.
"Listen, you know I'd do anything to keep you safe right.?"
"Yes."
"Ok. By the time we reach the end of the street, I want you to go inside the diner and order yourself something to eat."
"What about you?"
"I'll be fine. Also, I don't know when I'll be back for you that's why I put your stuff in your bag."
"I don't know where to go."
He reached for his pocket and pulled out an envelope with the money and give it to her.
" Don't open it 'til you're inside the restaurant."
"I don't want you to leave me. You're all I have." She hugged him real tight.
He responded, in the same way, knowing this is the last time they'll see each other.
" Alright, I gotta go. Take care of yourself. I love you, sis.
"Love you too bro."
Audrey's POV
As I took a seat in the booth, the final talk with my brother kept playing over and over again in my head. I can't believe this is happening to me. First, my mother dates some guy who treats her bad, then put me and my brother in danger by living with him, Nana's gone, Dad never came back and now my brother left. Even though he's trying to keep me safe, I'm alone with no one to turn to.
Lord look after my brother and me. Please help us through this.
I was startled out of my thoughts by someone's hand my shoulder. There appeared a man wearing a black suit.
"Hey, are you okay?" He asked.
I shook my head "no" looking down at the table. I was trying my best to fight to be tears, but the dreadful memories cause them to run down my face.
"What's wrong?"
"I got nowhere to go," I said wiping my tears with my jacket sleeve.
He crouches down consoling me before asking me where I was from.
"Where are you from?"
"Missouri."
"You came here by yourself?"
"I came here with my brother and his friend."
"Well, where are they?"
" I don't know where they went. My brother told me to come here and he left." I shrugged rubbing my eyes.
"Why would he leave you here by yourself?"
"To keep me safe."
Prince's POV
" Why would he keep you safe by leaving you here by yourself?" I asked her tryin' to understand why her brother would abandon his sister at a diner.
"So they won't find me." She answered.
"Who?"
"My mother and her boyfriend."
I then realized that they're being abused, but I still don't understand why he'd abandon her.
"Did he say why he left you here?"
"No."
I was about to speak until a waiter came to our booth to give us the menus.
"Hello, I'm Paul and I'll be your server for today. Can I start with drinks?"
"I'll have the orange juice."
The waiter asked her what she wanted and she ordered apple juice.
The waiter us told he'll be back in a few minutes to take our order which gives us enough time to finish our conversation.
"Why come to Minnesota? Don't y'all have relatives in Missouri?"
"We use to live with our Grandmother, but..." She paused batting her eyes fighting back tears from escaping her eyes.
"But what?"
"She died."
I wanted to ask how she died, but I didn't want to get too much into it.
"Why you too trying to get away from y'all mother and her boyfriend?" I asked hoping she'll give me a reason.
"They...they beat us real bad."
Audrey's POV
He tried to say something, but he was stunned by the words I've said to him. I waited a few minutes and he finally spoke.
"Did you try telling someone about it?"
"I thought about it, but I was scared of what might happen if we told someone."
"Did you tell your Grandmother?"
"Yes, she confronted my mother about it and they got into an argument. She's been taking care of me and my brother most of the time when our mother barely comes home."
He rubbed his forehead as he sighed. Maybe I've said too much. I grabbed my bag to leave, but he stopped me.
"What are you doing?" He asked with confusion.
"I probably said too much so I think it would be better if I leave."
"No, I'm not letting you do that. I think it would be better if you stayed with me."
"You'd let me stay with you?"
"It's better than letting you wander off yourself with no one else to take care of you."
I got nowhere to go and I don't know if my brother will come back. So I sat back down in the booth and picked up the menu looking for what I want to order.
"What's your name?"
"Audrey."
"That's a beautiful name. I'm Prince."
"As in, Prince from Purple Rain?" I asked with shock.
"Yeah, the one and only." He chuckled.
"You look different from the movie."
"I changed my look over the years."
The waiter came back to take our order after he took our order Prince and I continued our conversation while we wait on our food.
A/N: I had to make a few changes. Sorry for the mishap.
