Authors Note: Thank you for reading my story! I have a plan in place for the entire story, which I hope you'll all like. The first few years will be covered, however the real story begins in Year 4, so I will only be spending a few chapters on each of the first few years and will then go more in depth with longer chapters and more chapters per year from Year 4. Also, a very quick disclaimer for the entire story, I don't own Harry Potter. I only own Magnolia and Kaida. Anything that you recognise from Harry Potter does not belong to me. I'm basing this off a mix of the books and films, so some speech may be the same/similar and if so it's JK Rowling's. Thank you and enjoy!
Prologue.
Albus Dumbledore apparated onto the end of Privet Drive on a cool evening, he smiled to himself noticing the tabby cat sat on the wall outside 4 Privet Drive as he retrieved the deluminator from his robes and clicked it until all the street lamps on the road were off. Walking up to Number 4, he sat on the wall next to the cat.
"Fancy seeing you here, Professor McGonagall."
Next to him, the tabby cat had disappeared and had been replaced with a stern looking woman. She stretched slightly, stiff from sitting on the wall watching the inhabitants of the house all day whilst the rest of her kind had been celebrating. Professor McGonagall couldn't celebrate. She couldn't feel the elation the rest of her world felt.
Yes, she was glad You-Know-Who was gone but so were two fine people leaving behind barely year-old twins. After everything her community had been through during his reign of terror, everything the Ministry had done to protect their kind from being found out by the Muggles; the celebrations were threatening that. Now of all times, the children she was waiting for needed to be protected and that meant the Wizarding World needed to be kept secret. Professor McGonagall couldn't wait any longer. She had had enough small talk with Dumbledore, she needed answers to her questions.
"You know what everyone's saying? About why he disappeared? About what finally stopped him?"
Professor McGonagall could barely believe the rumours that had been swirling around the Wizarding Community. The events that had led to her and Albus sitting here, outside this house, were so implausible to her that she had to hear it from Dumbledore himself. She remembered the first time she had seen James and Lily; on their first day at Hogwarts as they gazed wide eyed at Hogwarts Castle until they were both sorted into her House.
She remembered watching them grow and learn. The pranks and mischief that James and his friends would create, the wonder in Lily's eyes when she learnt something new or found a magical item that she hadn't come across yet. She remembered the fights they got into, the quiet wrath that encompassed Lily in those moments and the defiance in James' whenever they came to blows. She remembered how those moments became fewer when James' defiance towards Lily's rule following changed into something else; acceptance, admiration, then love.
Tears welled in McGonagall's eyes as she remembered how hard James tried to make Lily forget about his mischievous childhood, how it slowly become apparent to everyone at Hogwarts that James' persistence was paying off. The teachers would talk sometimes about the students, James and Lily were both loved so it was only natural that when the rumours began to spread of Lily's change towards James that the teachers heard and discussed the oncoming union. Their love had been so natural in their final years of school, everyone was so glad when they heard of their wedding and soon after the wonderful news that they were growing their family.
"They're saying he tried to kill the Potter's son. After all he's done... all the people he killed... he couldn't kill a little boy? That's why he's gone? But what of the little girl?"
"She wasn't harmed; however, she was found outside of the crib separate to her brother." Dumbledore replied.
"Outside of the crib? Where was she?"
"It appears she was picked up out of it, separated from her brother when he was supposed to be killed."
"Why? Did he do that?"
"So, it seems. I suspect it is related to other curious consequence of this evening."
"Curious? Albus, what are you talking about?"
Professor McGonagall had asked the question, but she wasn't sure why. She had of course heard all the rumours surrounding the incident; the rumours of You-Know-Who's downfall, the rumours of James and Lily's deaths, the rumours that their son had been the sole survivor of three Potter's. Except there weren't three Potter's. There were four. When James and Lily welcomed their son into the world, they had also welcomed a little girl. Yet, no one was mentioning her fate. No one had mentioned her at all. It seemed almost like the entire world had forgotten about their young Potter girl.
It was then that their conversation was interrupted by a low rumbling. The noise slowly grew louder, and the pair looked into the sky just in time to see a huge motorbike appear in the sky and drop into the road next to them. Riding the motorbike was a man, a massive man with a bushy beard. He carefully climbed off the bike, making sure not to jostle the two bundles of blankets he held close to him. Professor McGonagall could see one small hand gripping his beard and wondered which of the twins that was.
"Hagrid, at last. Where did you get the motorbike?" Dumbledore asked, relief coating his voice at Hagrid's appearance.
"Borrowed it, Professor Dumbledore, sir. Young Sirius Black lent it me." Hagrid explained as he moved towards the pair. "I've got them, sir. Black wasn't too happy about giving her up, especially to come here."
"Of course, he must be concerned like we are Professor McGonagall."
McGonagall nodded in agreement, although she didn't think that Black's concern for the young girl was purely because more and more people were forgetting about her existence as the day went on. She had spent all day watching the Muggle's who lived in 4 Privet Drive and they were the worst case of Muggle's she'd ever come across. Surely, Albus wouldn't leave the twins in the care of these people. They'd be famous. At least, the boy would be famous. None of them knew what would happen to the girl.
Dumbledore had taken the twins from Hagrid now, after prying the little girls hand off Hagrid's beard; it seemed even at a young age she was not a fan of flying. Gently, Dumbledore placed the twins on the floor outside of the Dursley's home. The sleeping boy immediately rolled towards his sister as Dumbledore placed a letter with them.
As he walked away, Hagrid on the motorbike disappeared into the horizon and a tabby cat slinked around the corner on the other end of the street. Dumbledore stopped on the corner, pulling out the Deluminator and allowing the streetlights to glow again. He looked back at number 4 hoping that this was the best decision for the twins; the boy who lived, and the girl with a curse on her name.
