CHAPTER SIX:
After half an hour, Luke finally finishes his coffee. FINALLY. We are still sat at the playground in the mall, awkwardly looking at the kids in silence.
"So, what do you want to do now?" He suddenly asks. He catches me off guard. I was looking at a little boy with curly blonde hair, who was currently climbing onto the slide, just to slide back down. A lot of other kids are sat on the benches at the playground, playing with their iPads whilst their mothers are talking to someone on the phone or shopping in the lingerie store. There's sale at the moment, as all people already bought everything before Christmas, now everyone wants to lose their products before they go into the trash.
"Do you see that boy over there?" I ask.
"Um yeah, what is with him?" He says looking at me with furrowed eyebrows.
"He is almost the only one that is playing on the slide. Almost all the other kids are on their iPads or talking to somebody." I state. It is kind of sad seeing the boy play alone, yet he has so much fun. He has a big grin plastered on his face and squeals every time he slides back to the ground.
"So?" Luke asks.
"Are you kidding me? I want a son like that -"
"Wait wait wait. Aren't you a bit young to be thinking about being a mother?" He says in a mocking tone. God, I swear this giraffe is so annoying on so many different levels.
"Don't interrupt me next time. I was saying that I wanted a son like that when I'm older for god's sake." I roll my eyes. "Don't you think it's pathetic?" I ask again, glancing at Luke who is now holding his phone. "Luke! You've got to be kidding me!" I groan. Is he being serious? I talk about how pathetic it is that kids nowadays play with iPhones and iPads instead of playing in the ball pit throwing balls at each other, and he seriously just takes out his phone.
"What?" He asks, looking at me with raised eyebrows and I look at him with angry eyebrows.
"Nevermind. I'm leaving, thanks for the coffee." I say and stand up to leave. I'm done with this kid. It was nice from him telling me what went on at the party and it was nice from him keeping me safe. But if he was going to act like that, I would gladly like to stay away from him and never see him again.
I hear footsteps coming towards me though and a panting voice behind me breathing: "Babe, wait." Luke says. "I didn't mean it like that. I was... I was..."
"Go away." I sigh, turning on my heels and exiting the mall.
"Look, I can't tell you but please let me drive you home." He half asks, half begs. I originally planned on taking the bus, but a part of my head tells me to take advantage of the situation while it lasts.
"Why can't you tell me?" I turn around and act like I'm offended. In reality I honestly don't really care.
"Because, babe. I'll tell you when you need to know." He sighs and looks sorry. "Please, I'm sorry, let me make it up to you." It feels so wrong using him, but at the same time I kind of like having control of the situation.
"How do you want to make it up to me?" I say.
"Um... Let me take you out on a dinner-date sometime?" Score, food for free! Although I'm not really sure if I want to go on a date with him because he is annoying as fudge.
"I'll think about it. I'll text you, Luke Hemmings isn't it?" I finally give in.
"Yes, Ava Taylor, isn't it?" He says and I nod. "Okay, now shall I drive you home?" He asks with a genuine smile plastered on his face. I can see an odd sparkle in his eyes that I identify as hope, but don't ask me, I'm not some eye-reading witch so I wouldn't know.
I say that I'd like him to drive me home though and soon enough we are sitting in his car, listening to heavy metal music as we drive. I move to turn the music down, it's getting on my nerves but Luke is faster than me and slaps my hand off of the volume-button.
"What the hell are you doing?!" He yells at me, but his facial expression softens as he realizes how hard he had slapped my hand and how I'm holding my hand in pure pain right now.
"Ouch! What the hell was that?!" I shout back and he is soon rubbing my thigh in soothing motions. Surprisingly, it's actually soothing me and I soon forget about the pain, instead I focus on how good his warmth feels on my thigh.
"I'm sorry babe, I didn't mean it like that." He says calmly and keeps his hand put. "I just like to listen to it while I drive."
"Why?" I ask.
"I don't know, when I'm driving I always think about things, like right now. And I guess the heavy music keeps me calm." He says and I feel dumbfounded.
"How in earth could this music calm someone down?" I scoff and tense, but Luke starts rubbing circles against my jeans and I return to my normal state again. I think it's strange how a stranger can soothe you so good. I only met him today - well actually yesterday - and now he already makes such a warming gesture? Him rubbing circles on my leg ignites a spark inside of me, nonetheless I'm calm and relaxed and enjoy the feeling.
"I don't know. It just works for me I guess." He says and pulls his hand away. I almost whine at the sudden lack of contact. I really wished he just let his hand lay on my leg the whole drive, but at the same time I don't want him to know that, I don't want to sound desperate to him.
"I have a question..." I begin.
"Shoot."
"Why did you even text me?" I ask, this question I have been dying to ask since he first texted me.
"I already told you that, you said you loved me and I can't just let you down, can I?" He states with a smirk. I blush, even though I was drunk and probably said the worst things in that state, it still embarrasses me, because I'm not really the type of person who lets loose on parties.
"Shut up, you know I didn't mean that, I was drunk." I giggle.
He gasps and puts the hand that was on my leg two minutes ago over his heart. "Ouch." He whines.
I laugh and he joins me, I must say this annoying giraffe is quite funny.
"Nah, just kidding babe. I wanted to check on you since you really were quite drunk and I wanted to see if you didn't got raped or something." He says and I giggle again.
"No I didn't get raped for how far I know. Did you?"
"Yeah, about three times I think, but it wasn't that bad." He says and I crack up giggling again. "Stop giggling! What have you been smoking?" He laughs and looks at me out of the corners of his eyes. I can't help but blush at his cute dimples when he smiles.
