Chapter 48
Blink
Blink saw Bambi grimace as she dug her good hand into her pants pocket. "Uh, do you want help?" he asked.
She frowned down at him. Her face was pale and there was sweat on her forehead, even though it was cold in the car. "Do I want Ash's voodoo doll reaching into my pants? No. Thanks." She pulled out her cell phone and the buzzing got louder.
"Hey, he's the one with the hormones, not me," Blink said.
Ash looked away from the road, raised his eyebrows. "Blink. Jeez."
Bambi tapped her phone with a thumb and brought it up to her ear. Everyone in the car seemed to flinch when they heard the screaming. "Help! Now," said the voice on the other end. Bambi jerked the phone away from her ear. Blink saw the name on the screen: Hehet.
He didn't know where Bambi got the energy, but she yelled at the phone. "We're on our way! We're on our way!"
The screaming stopped and Hehet's voice became recognizable. "Hurry! They're freaking everywhere." Her voice became distant. "James, just punch him already. Don't be a wussy."
Blink looked at Ash and Bambi. Their eyes were as wide as his. Hehet came back on. "Tell Ash to learn to drive and get here now." She hung up on them.
"At least she's back to herself," Ash said. He stepped on the gas and Blink held on tight when his human lifted the two charm necklaces and waved them at the back seat. "Will you put these on now?"
"Ash, what's going on?" Janey asked.
Blink felt for his human, physically and emotionally. The frustration they shared was growing and he didn't know which one of them was the source of it. He wished he could help, but until Curtis and Janey put on the charms, he was out of the loop.
"I've tried to tell you," Ash said. "Now I'm trying to show you. Just put the things on." Blink peeked back. Curtis and Janey looked at each other. They were obviously going for some kind of unified front. Neither reached for a necklace.
After a moment, Ash sighed and put his hand back on the wheel. Blink looked out the window and saw they were getting close to James' house. Even half a block away, he could see the crowd of humans who were walking toward the house. There had to be thirty of them. "Heads up," he said. Everyone but Janey and Curtis leaned forward.
"What's going on?" Ribbon said. She had crawled out of the backpack and sat on the floor of the car near Bambi's feet.
"Bad guys everywhere," Blink said. "Can you feel them?"
Ribbon shook her head. "I can feel people inside the house."
"How are they doing?" Blink asked.
"James and Danica are confused, a little scared. Hehet is just pissed. At everybody." Ribbon said. Blink hadn't thought to use her ability as recon before.
"Anything else?" he asked.
"Bambi's in a lot of pain. Her arm is definitely broken."
"Uh, she can hear you," Blink said.
"Wonderful," Bambi said.
"What's the plan, guys?" Ash asked. Blink looked out the car window as Ash slowed. The humans were packed most tightly around the front door, with a few at each window. They hadn't broken in yet.
"One second," Blink said. He teleported into the front room of the house. Hehet saw him and screamed. Blink flinched and popped behind Danica. "Whoa, it's me! No more bug spray!"
