It was finally Saturday.
Training day.
My favorite day.
I felt a small evil grin creep onto my face as I stretched out in my bunk. We were allowed to sleep in a full two hours after our usual wake up time. I could hear the grateful sleepy breathing echoing throughout the cabin by everyone.
And of course, every Saturday, I woke up two hours early.
I waited in my bed, debating with myself wether it would be worth it to get off my top bunk and grab a few study books. I stared at the ground below me, right where my books were.
It surprised me when I saw two sea blue eyes pop up at the side of my bunk. I gave a small yelp and backed up into the wall, bumping my head on the ceiling. I heard a sleepy groan come from one of my cabin mates.
Clutching my head, I sent a wicked glare at Lynk. He was clamping a hand over his mouth to keep from laughing. I nodded my head to the courtyard, and mouthed 'meet me outside.'
Lynk joined me on one of our marble swinging benches outside. I ran my hand over the cool and smooth texture, gently swaying the hanging bench with my legs.
"So do we have any lessons today?" Lynk asked quietly. He had been doing good the past week, remembering where his classes were and arriving there somewhat not late. I helped him with his studying. He completed his cabin tasks, and kept his bunk and small closet clean. But this was his first Saturday, and no matter how well he was doing, nothing could prepare him for this.
I smiled at his obliviousness. "Of course there's a lesson today."
"A single lesson? What do you mean?"
I laughed. "The best lesson of all."
"Fern, you're starting to creep me out. What lesson is it?"
I swept out my beautiful fawn, feathery wings. "Field work training!" I yelled as I pushed down hard with my wings, lifting myself into the air. I laughed like a maniac, spiraling higher into the air. I twisted and twirled, enjoying the cool morning air.
I noticed Lynk on the ground, expanding his huge black wings. His huge wingspan caught the light, and shined slightly in rainbow colors like an oil puddle, like each individual feather was made of obsidian. I hovered in mid air as Lynk leapt up off the ground and glided towards me. I laughed and shot towards him, making Lynk freeze in confusion. I halted millimeters from him, and poked a single finger at his arm.
"Tag, you're it!" I jeered gleefully. My wings pounded down as I soared even higher. Lynk swore and followed after me. I darted just out of his reach, gave him a playful wink, and dove down to the ground.
I landed gracefully onto the mossy ground just outside our fenced courtyard. Lynk touched down right after me. I sprinted away as soon as he got close. I could hear his wings flapping, flying just above the ground to give him the speed of flying while still being able to catch a running me.
I leapt over the courtyard fence and danced around the fountain. Lynk landed on the other side, and we rounded the fountain again and again until he finally jumped over it and playfully tackled me.
"Tag," he panted. I squirmed under his firm grip.
"Fern!"
I turned to see Kane staring at us. I quickly got up and dusted off myself, looking nervous. What did I have to be nervous about? Kane was my friend.
I looked up at Kane's scruffy face. He had stubble growing on his chin, obviously neglecting his hygiene again. He always joked about me being paranoid about his beards.
His black hair was slicked back, and his leather jacket was tattered slightly. I saw another logo of some eagle fighting a snake embroidered on the sleeve. I cocked my hip out and planted a hand on it. "Kane, please don't tell me you're biking with the humans again."
"Hey, my choice, sweetheart." He said, obviously not caring. But his honey brown eyes shined with happiness as they always did when I noticed something about him. But he hid it well.
"Um, excuse me, but would you mind introducing me to your friend, Fern?"
Oh crap. I forgot about Lynk.
I walked over to Kane and gave him a side hug. "This is Kane. He's my friend."
Lynk eyed me suspiciously. He looked... I couldn't pin his emotion. Something angry.
"Not from the Academy?"
"Hell no." Kane piped in. I gasped. He knew that was the one thing we shouldn't say here.
"And are you... Dating?"
I blushed. "Of course not!" I practically shouted at Lynk. I had known Kane since...
Lynk laughed, interrupting my thought. I gave him a dirty look, then stalked off back into the cabin where most of my cabinmates were just getting up.
Kane ducked under the doorway, too tall to fit under it properly. He ruffled my hair with a leather-gloved hand. "It's training day, right?"
"Duh, every Saturday. Are you watching this time?"
"Nah, gotta head back down for the pack."
I sighed. "I can't believe you got into another one. You shouldn't spend this much time down there. The human corruption will get to you!" I said, while waving my fingers in his face for dramatic effect. He batted them away.
"Better get going now." Kane looked off into the distance out the window, his mind obviously far below.
"Kay, bye." I gave him a quick hug.
"Bye, Thea."
I gave him a quizzical look. "Why my real name?"
He just winked at me and walked out of the cabin, spreading his huge fiery red-orange wings. Some people said they matched my hair color.
I turned to see Lynk giving me a suspicious stare. "What?" I asked.
He shook his head. "You act different around him."
A bell rang in the distance before I could respond. We all rushed out of the cabin into the training field, a manicured arena with bleachers surrounding it from all sides. The corners of my mouth twitched into an involuntary smile. This is my element, I thought.
"Ladies and gentlemen, let the training battle begin!"
