“Maya, wake up.” Her brother whispered against her ear as he gently moved her head from his shoulder. She opened her eyes and then quickly squinted, letting them adjust to the suddenly brightly lit chamber.
“We have to go?” Another voice spoke as she slowly filled her eyes with light. The image of one unfamiliar Krystanian and two others she’d seen today appeared in front of her. “Evera, you’ll take the female,” the blonde instructed the not-so-nice woman Maya had met when she woke up this afternoon. Well, she wasn’t sure if it was still the same day or if it was already past midnight. “Keir, you’ll take him,” he pointed at Tavish, “and I will take the other one.”
“Where are we going,” Maya asked in her sleepy voice. Were they rescuing them? No that couldn’t be it, not with that woman with them. She fumbled to get up and Lockie aided her to her feet. “Are you going to kill us?”
“I wish,” Evera muttered, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.
“We are taking you to where you’ll be staying until the king decides your fate,” the blonde said. His statement wasn’t so reassuring but at least they weren’t dying today. They still had time to find a way to escape.
Throwing the torch he was holding on the ground, he stomped it with his feet. In the presence of darkness, their crystal lightened up. The light wasn’t enough for Maya to see in the dark but a guide to point out where the Krystanians were if their current blue eyes weren’t a clue enough.
Evera crept forward and Maya couldn’t help feeling a little nervous. What if she decided to transport her to a different location? After all, she wanted her dead. Besides that, she dreaded the side effects of materialization. She’d never had motion sickness but she was certain this felt much worse.
“Stand still,” the blonde said in the dark as Evera gripped the side of her hands. Before she could take in a breath and brace herself for the process, she was already off her feet.
The materialization experience wasn’t as bad as the first time, she was getting the hang of it. But she couldn’t say the same for the boys. Hands resting on his knees, her brother looked like he was going to puke and Tavish, unable to keep his balance, sat on the floor.
Taking her eyes off the two, she took in her surroundings. They had materialized in the middle of a living room. Four rustic couches surrounded a massive stone fireplace that flickered with a newly lit fire. Its grey stone walls were decorated with fabric art, painting, and wire art pieces that matched the rustic decor. A wooden dining table was off to the far end of the living room, nearing a door that Maya suspected led to the kitchen.
“Oh, you are here.” The nice man and owner of the home walked out of the kitchen, in his hand was a bowl. “Come to the table. The food is ready.”
Lockie and Tavish were almost back to their old self when the Krystanian began leading the way.
“Take a seat,” the nice man said as they approached the already set table. Alluring rich aromas of foods seeped into the living room, promising nothing short of delicious.
Instead of stopping, the other three Krystanians walked farther towards the kitchen door. “What about them?” Maya asked, her eyes following the three.
“This is all for you,” he glanced at the various foods laid on the table.
“All this.” Her eyes flared. There was so much, it looked like a Thanksgiving feast. There was a variety of fruits, bread, mashed potatoes, rice and other few things she didn’t know…wait, was that chicken soup she was smelling?
“How sure are we that this isn’t poisoned?” Lockie asked.
He smirked. “If we wanted to kill you, you would already be dead. And we wouldn’t use coward means like this.” Gesturing towards the kitchen, he said, “I’ll be in there in case you need me.”
