Hunter tossed and turned as any chance of falling asleep slipped further and further away. This wasn’t something new to him. The weight of the throne gave him sleepless nights now and then. But today was different, tonight’s reason for his restlessness was a certain redhead female human.

Why was he feeling guilty? Why was he feeling bad for having left her in an angry state? It’s not like he looked and he didn’t have to confirm that twice for her to believe it. A king didn’t ever have to explain himself. And she should have understood that he couldn’t let them go, not when it meant risking the safety of his planet.

For once, maybe he should have lowered his royal ego and apologized. Maybe he shouldn’t have spoken to her like he was talking to one of his warriors. He needed to make peace. After all, his plan was riding on him being on good terms with her.

With a solid solution for his problem, the noises in his head became quieter. Focusing on his breathing, he tried to fall asleep.

A knock on the door had him spit out a curse. “Who is it?”

“It’s Evera, my king.” What was she doing here? Hadn’t he given her strict instructions not to be more than five feet away from Maya?

He swung the covers off his body and hurriedly walked towards the heavy wooden door. Turning the knob, he flung it open. “Shouldn’t you be somewhere else right now?” His brows raised and curved.

“I-It’s…” she hesitated before continuing. “The humans tried to escape.”

“What?! How did this happen!”

“I caught the blonde one, Lockie, trying to steal the crystal from my sleeping father. Pa told me to come and inform you right away. I said it, these humans are trouble. You should have left them in the dungeons.”

Hunter walked back inside his chambers. The room was comfortably large with a king-size bed that was not pushed against the wall but more central, a bureau with a large mirror and a wardrobe. On one wall hung a painting of his family and on the other were two large windows curtained with white linen.

He found a shirt and threw it on. Making his way back to where Evera stood, he said, “Let’s go.”

A second later, they were standing in the living room of her home. Dallan was leaning against the wall separating the kitchen from the dining area, watching the three humans sitting on the couch. Instead of feeling guilty and ashamed for what they’d been about to pull off, the female had the audacity to look pissed.

“Didn’t you hear me earlier when I said you’re not leaving this planet?” he said, making his way towards them.

“I heard you. But did you think we were going to graciously accept that?”

Hunter could feel the tension in his body grow and the muscles on his face tighten. “On Krystan, every subject is obliged to obey my commands.”

She stood up and closed up the space he’d left, leaving hardly any between them. For the second time today, she raised her voice at him. “We are not your subjects and you’re not our King!”

“I’ll have you sent back to the dungeons and we’ll see how long it will take before you accept my position here.”

She was about to say something when the other male who was not her brother stepped beside her. What was his name again… Tavish. “It was stupid of us to try and escape, we see that now.” Maya stared at him in confusion. “Please don’t send us to that awful place.”

“At least this one is sensible.”

Turning to face her, he rested his hand on her shoulder and began leading her back to the chair. She was hesitant for the first few steps but then he whispered something to her and she obliged.
