Could GAA be hiding Krystan’s existence from the rest of the world? Could that explain why her Dad had been acting weird about the journal?
These questions occupied Maya’s mind when she woke up the following day. And the entire time she sat across from her father during breakfast.
Could Lockie know about Krystan and wasn’t telling her about it? She quickly dismissed that thought. It couldn’t be, she would have seen the truth through him, she always did.
She was determined to get answers, even if it wasn’t her father to tell her. She was going to find the truth on her own. And she knew just where to start.
“Is there a special someone in your life, Tavish?” Her Mum’s question completely took Maya’s mind off her plans. “Have you met someone else after…What’s her name?”
“Kate,” he answered before shaking his head. “No special someone.”
Maya dreaded what would come next. She cursed herself for ever telling her mother about her crush. Well, she’d been only fourteen then and wouldn’t have known her Mum would try to play matchmaker every now and then.
The last two years had been quiet, Travish had been in a relationship. When Lockie mentioned his friend’s breakup three months ago, Maya had known these embarrassing moments would be back.
“You know my daughter is still single too...”
“MUM!” She pinned her mother with a hard gaze.
“Did I say something wrong? Aren’t you waiting for your prince charming.” her mother smiled mischievously. “Or have you met someone at the University?”
“N-no.” Her eyelids dropped.
“I’m sure it’s just a matter of time. The right guy will come along.” Travish said.
“Besides, she is still too young for that.” Her overprotective brother added.
“And aren’t you too old to be single?” Their mother said. Even though he was coming to her rescue, she couldn’t help the chuckle. Lockie had recently entered his thirties and their mother had been hoping to be holding her tiny grandchild by then. But that wasn’t happening anytime soon, her brother was married to his job to ever have time to date.
“Can I have a talk with you after this,” her Dad said, ending the discussion.
She nodded.
She found herself eagerly waiting for their small meeting. Hopefully, her father would settle her curiosity and she wouldn’t have to go on that illegal quest.
Once they were done eating breakfast, the two pulled away to the living room.
“Sweetheart,” he began, “I’m sorry for my reaction yesterday. I understand I may have been a little harsh.”
“It’s okay Dad. I forgive you.” She beamed. “So about the journal…”
He shook his head. “You don’t have to know about everything lassie. You shouldn’t have found those letters and I don’t know how that journal fell into your hands.” He sighed. “I want you to let this go. Could you do that for me?”
“But Dad…”
“Please, Maya.” He pleaded with her.
“O-okay,” she said, making a promise she knew she wasn’t going to keep.
Planting a kiss on her forehead. “See you next week,” he said before heading towards the main door.
The moment he was out of sight, Maya climbed the flight of stairs to the first floor. And even though she knew everyone else was downstairs, she found herself walking quietly in the hallway, glancing behind her after every second. Coming to a pause in front of her father’s home office, her hand lingered on the door knob.
