I walked up to the daunting school building, but thankfully, after yesterday's events, it didn't seem so frightening.
After Glidde was revealed to me, we spent some time talking and getting to know each other. He could easily tell that my self-confidence was lacking and he promised to help me work on it. Glidde prided himself in being self-assured and someone with a good self-esteem, so he suggested that by being partnered together, I could learn confidence and he could learn to be more humble. All in all, it sounded like a plan to me.
He currently resided in my school bag and as I walked I almost smiled at the thought that I have somewhat of a personal guardian now.
I entered the school building and ventured into my classroom. Most of the students were already there and I quickly took averted my eyes and sat down the back. Nathaniel was not here yet so I was sitting alone.
I was taking out my school stuff when suddenly, someone's shadow cast over my desk.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the little scardy cat who ran away from the cafeteria" chided a snobby voice from beside me. I looked up and sunk further into my seat when I was met with a pair of glaring blue eyes. It was the same girl I was warned to stay away from.
I didn't say anything, but I didn't look away either.
"What are you staring at freak!" she exclaimed, folding her arms over her chest.
I quickly averted my eyes to stare at the floor. All I wanted was for the attention to be off me again.
"Well? Are going to answer me continue to look like a lost-"
"Don't you have other people to terrorize Chloe? She's just new, leave her alone" called a soft yet firm voice from behind her. The blonde turned around and glared daggers at Nathaniel who had just come into class.
"What does it matter to you tomato-head?" she sneered. Suddenly, a light appeared in her eyes and a look of recognition flashed on her face.
"Oooooh... I see" she smirked, "You like her. Is that why you're standing up for her Nathaniel? Everyone knows you hardly ever speak, so what other reason would there be" she drawled.
Nathaniel and I blushed from embarrassment but somehow he continued to glare at Chloe.
"Listen Chloe, I know it is one of your habits to make people look bad in front of a crowd, but this is seriously crossing the line" he grounded out while trying to remain calm.
Chloe, however, didn't listen. She continued to laugh and point at Nathaniel. "Guys look!" she exclaimed, "Nathaniel is actually standing up for himself" she announced, earning a snicker from a few people.
Nathaniel turned an even deeper shade of red and that was when I decided that I had enough. This guy reminded me too much of what I was like back at my old school.
"Stop!" I spoke, gaining the attention of everyone in the room. The class stared at me in anticipation but I was too busy fixing a calm expression on my face to notice. Chloe turned to me in surprise but quickly covered it up with a frown.
"Ugh, why don't you just shut up and stay out of the way!"
"Because what you're doing is very bratty" I explained with a frown, "did your parents never teach you any manners or are you naturally like this?"
Chloe's mouth fell open and she stared at me with angry eyes.
"How dare you call me a brat, freak!" she yelled, but just as she was about to push me the teacher came in and asked everyone to sit down. Chloe gave me one last glare before grudgingly returning to her seat.
I breathed a sigh of relief, before sitting back down and opening my notes copy. There is no doubt that Chloe will try to somehow come up with revenge for speaking out like that, but deep down I knew I did the tight thing.
I felt someone sit next to me and I glanced up at Nathaniel who was smiling. His eyes twinkled and seemed genuinely happy.
"Thank you Y/N. I owe you one" he whispered, beginning to unpack his bag.
I stared at him with surprise. "What do you mean? You were the one you stood up for me" I whispered back.
Nathaniel shook his head and turned his body to face me. "I don't really know what came over me. I guess you kind of reminded me of myself so I figured I-I would-" he turned away awkwardly.
I contemplated my next moves for a second, before I grasped his arm which caused him to turn back to me in surprise.
"I appreciate it. Seriously" I assured him.
Nathaniel stared at me for a moment but then grinned and looked away. I smiled to myself.
I didn't exactly mind that he chose not to say anything to my statement, because rather like him I preferred the silent exchange between people much more than I did vocal.
