I don't think I could ever get used to how cold it always seems to be. This cold seems to be my only constant in Washington. Even with how freezing it is; Mike, Tyler, Jessica, and others suit up to go surfing. Eric stays back instead at the vans. Funny thinking back to all the boasting he was doing earlier. I walk around some driftwood with Angela whose taking pictures. "I keep thinking Eric's going to ask me to prom, then he just... doesn't."

"You could ask him." I continue at Angela's flustered look. I wonder if I could make a substantial difference. Worth a try, "Angela, what about Ben Cheney, I think you would be cute together. Either way, take control. You're a strong independent woman."

"I am?" I want to reassure Angela but a voice stops me.

"Bella!" Jacob, Sam, and Embry are walking toward us.

"Guys, this is Jacob. Do you have a sort of second sense to know I was on the rez?" I smirk at him which he returns by his beaming smile.

"Nah, surprised though. You surfing?"

"Definitely not. Let's just say I'm as graceful as making mud pies."

Jessica must put in her thoughts. "Keep her company. Her date bailed." I try not to look annoyed and have to keep myself from telling her that she wouldn't have a prom date if it wasn't for me.

Eric quickly asks, "What date?"

"She invited Edward."

"I don't see what's wrong with that. A group of us were already going."

"I think it's nice she invited him. No one ever does." There is Angela's politeness on display again.

"Because Cullen's a freak." Wow, quite a powerful insult and about someone that isn't there to defend themselves.

"You got that right." No one asked you, Sam. You haven't even met Edward yet here you are already putting bias to use.

"You know them?"

Sam's look is fierce. "The Cullens don't come here." Jacob shakes his head at Sam. I decide to ask Jacob for the walk but not to lead him on by playing with his feelings.

"You want to go look at tide pools?" We walk out and watch for whales. "So, want to give reasons for the shady 'the Cullens don't come here?'" I try to intimidate Sam's voice and we both laugh at the poor attempt.

"Oops. Caught that, huh?" He leans in to whisper. "I'm not supposed to say anything."

"I have a feeling I already know. And you know I can keep a secret like full mud pie stories." I grin at him. Jacob laughs at that.

"It's just an old scary story. Did you know the Quileutes are supposedly descended from wolves?"

"Like fur, fangs... puppy eyes?" Jacob laugh and I join. "And in these legends the Cullens are supposedly?" I trail off with the question.

"Well, they're supposedly descended from this like 'enemy clan.' But they claimed to be different, so we made a treaty with them."

"The Cullens just moved here two years ago."

"Or just moved back."

"Interesting. So what was this treaty? I would think of renegotiating after all these years."

Jacob's voice drops lower. "If they promised to stay off Quileute lands, we wouldn't expose what they really were to the pale-faces." At the dramatic pause a shiver runs down my back. A part of me feels guilty pushing him to break the treaty. There was an ear piercing scream that makes me jump into Jacob. Just to look up and see Angela run past us with Eric chasing her holding something that I didn't what to put much thought into.

Jacob smirks at my jumpiness and we start walking back to the vans. "That is quite a story."

Jacob laughs and agrees. I wish I could tell him how things are really about to start changing in his life.
