Author's Note
Somehow writing in first person point of view is hard for me. I have always liked 3rd person. So henceforth,I might be using 3rd person POV,if I have to switch to first person POV,I'll indicate.
We're about to meet another character,sit tight.The Ike's Residence:Lekki
8:00pm
''You can't tell me you would give up your education, what would you be doing with your life after then,'' Mrs Christine Ike resounded. It felt like her son had been spitting gibberish ever since he got into the house from school. He had been expelled from Gateway University, the most expensive and private university in Nigeria. How could her only son and heir to her husband's businesses and estate be spitting all this rubbish. She was livid. She couldn't come to terms with the fact that so much had been sacrificed to make life for her children better than it was for her growing up,and then all of a sudden one of them wakes up and decides school was out of the equation. The devil was playing a very fine tune, and it had sure captured the attention of her son.
Chigozie Ike on the other hand could care less if he returned back to school or not. His fantasies were more than the four walls of school. He had always wanted to be a geographic explorer. His parents thought it was all a phase and that he had been watching too many NATGEO documentaries growing up. He knew it was more than a phase. It was a passion. But his parents didn't understand passion. Passion didn't put food on the table,or pay the bills. All they wanted was for their son to study Finance in the university in hopes that one day he could run the family's chain of businesses.
Chigo(as he was fondly called) wondered why Ugo and Ifeoma were never pushed this much by their parents. They got to choose their courses of study and they were doing pretty well. ''Maybe it's because they are girls, they would end up in a man's house and help build his family'',he thought to himself. In his own case,he was the man and it was up to him to make out something tangible for himself first before bringing home a woman.
At 22 years, and after spending almost 3 years at Gateway University;he was back home to start this phase of his life afresh. He could just do himself and his family this favour by passing through school,''how hard could it be'',he thought. ''Mum,mum, please calm down. I am sorry. I don't know what came over me. Besides deciding to write the exam for Obiora didn't seem much of a big deal. He was ill,and I am sure he would have done the same for me''. A bewildered Christine turned to look at her son's face. ''Did he offer you money?'' She asked. ''No mum,I just wanted to help;he would have done the same for me. We just didn't think I would be caught''.
''Hear yourself Chigozie Samuel Ike'',she would not hear the last of it as she spoke in anger calling out his full names. ''Anyways your father and I are yet to come to a conclusion on what to do next and what school you should go,actions are to be carried out immediately. Time waits for no one,you can go in till your father returns''. Chigo made his way up the stairs and down the hallway leading to his room at the east wing of the Ike's mansion. His luggage stood in front of the door waiting to be taken inside the room.
One of the maids had already cleaned his room as soon as Mrs Ike announced that her son would be coming back home today. The driver took up the boxes as they got into the house. He couldn't wait to rest his head and sleep. He had too much going through his mind. Mentally he was angry with himself for what he did,but he dare not show it to his parents. He had wanted to so bad to finish his course of study at Gateway and travel out for his masters where he could start a course in Ecology. His parents didn't know this plan of his,he kept it secret and only told Obiora and his sisters. At least they were more understanding. Starting over seemed like it would take eternity, but at that moment he just wanted to drift off to sleep.......
Back to the mainland
The Okonkwos residence.
Adanna's POV
8:00pm''Mma good evening, how was your day'', Oluchi said as she opened the door for their mother and collected the bags she came home with. ''Nwa m,we thank God oo'', Ogoma Okonkwo replied.
''Mummy welcome back ma'', ''Mma good evening'' Rose and Ada greeted simultaneously. ''My children how are you. Sisi Rose, you remembered us today, hope you are reading hard'', Mrs Okonkwo questioned. ''Mummy I am fine, thank you ma. I didn't want to distract Ada while she was preparing for her exam so I had to give her some space;and I am reading hard. Law is not beans'' Rose joke cried. ''You will overcome my daughter''.... ''Amen oooo'' came Rose's voice.
Emm,mummy please let me escort Rose to the bus stop so she can take keke (tricycle) back to her hostel in school. Oluchi please serve mummy her food, I said all at once while leaving the house. ''O nwa m,je bata'' (okay my child,go and return), my mum replied.
After I got back from seeing Rose off,I sat in our living room with my mum and sister awaiting the arrival of our Father. My elder brothers were currently not home. Ikechukwu(IK) the eldest was already serving in the compulsory NYSC at Abuja, and Obinna was in his final year at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in Enugu state. Oluchi was still trying to finish up some of her assignments from school.
Knock,knock,knock...
''That must be your dad,get the door Ada''. I stood up in response to my mum and went to open the door for my dad.
Welcome Sir,how was work today; I say collecting my dad's suitcase. He looked so tired. ''Thank you Ada,we thank God for today,I need to eat and rest''. Ermm daddy, I have something I want to tell you and mummy. I fidgeted a bit. I didn't want to let the cat out of the bag just yet.
''Hope nothing happened, and by the way did you check your result today?, he asked. It's about the result Sir.From the dining area of the sitting room,Oluchi's voice resounded ''she scored 284 daddy!!! Daddy good evening Sir,sorry''. My dad looked too happy to be bothered about Oluchi's behaviour. ''That's good my dear, now prepare for the last phase well and success shall be yours''. Amen daddy, thank you, I responded. Let me dish your food while you freshen up.
''So you waited for your father to come back before giving me the good news o kwa ya'' (is that so). Haba mummy, you saw that I wanted to tell you both before Oluchi opened that big mouth of hers, I said staring daggers at my younger sister. ''It's okay. I am happy for you,and may the next step be easier in Jesus name'' Amen!!!. Trust Nigerian mothers to turn everything to prayer,I thought and chuckled internally.
As I got my dad's food ready,I couldn't help but feel how things were starting to look better and how it seemed like I would surely get into the university this time around. I knew there were people who have tried more than 4 times but still haven't gotten admission. But they say ''it is not how far but how well''. I just wanted to make the most of mine.
