In the hotel room, twelve hours later, the pair tried to remember exactly what had gotten them here. Jake remembered going to lunch and they caught up.
This was the Jake Chen.
He had been the king of Plymouth High School and head of the theater program. He could sing, dance and act through anything. He was involved in every single club that the school offered and had been able to fit into any crowd. Every single girl in school (Charlie included) had a huge crush on him.
Charlie had been more of a background character in a movie most of her high school experience so it was amazing to finally talk to someone that had been such a big personality that she never really got to meet before. This was the first time she was really ever able to talk to Jake for more than a few moments and mumbling involved.
They spent most of the lunch talking about their lives after graduation and he asked about how everything was going for her in Boston. She in turn asked how his family was doing.
Jake was the older son of Margaret and Jonathan Chen and had been raised in Boston his whole life until he turned eighteen and decided that he wanted to be a professional actor. His mother had worked for a small advertising firm and his father was a lawyer. They agreed that she would quit working and become Jake's full-time manager.
Charlie remembered Mrs. Chen well. Jake hadn't just been the most popular guy in school- he was involved in everything. He was on the student council, valedictorian, the theater, and had been a Homecoming Prince his first two years and King the final two. He was the poster child for how to be perfect. That had a lot to do with Mrs. Chen's constant efforts. She was at every single PTA meeting and bake sale. You could rely on her for anything the school needed and she ruled Plymouth parents with an iron fist.
Charlie was fond of Mrs. Chen because she was also incredibly kind to her. She had always made an effort to help out kids who's parents might not be able to make it to meetings or worked more than one job or had several children to look after. She would offer car pool to anyone who missed the bus or give an extra set of cookies at the bake sale for anyone who's parents just couldn't afford it. And while most people thought she did it to show off, Charlie always thought it was because she wanted the parents to not feel like they weren't doing their best for their kids.
Charlie's father always appreciated the efforts Mrs. Chen took and thanked her whenever she brought Charlie home late from rehearsal one or two days during a big production.
Charlie had met Mr. Chen at every performance and school function and he had been a very kind, quiet man who liked to throw in Dad jokes whenever he could.
Jake's little sister, Juliet Chen, had been a very sweet and outgoing young girl. Since her mother was constantly occupied with Jake, Juliet was usually in tow whenever her own fictions were not going on. She had been a cheerleader and in every club just like her brother. She was smart and always did her homework during Jake's theater rehearsals. Charlie always wondered what it must be like to have a big brother constantly in the spotlight and having to do your best to try and shine on your own. But Juliet clearly thrived in the competitive environment that her mother had put her in and was easily smarter than all of the high school kids.
Charlie talked about her father to Jake and he could honestly say that he didn't have a single memory of her father and that he was sorry about that. He was certain that he'd been at their graduation, but he'd been in so many photos and talked to so many people that day he hardly remembered. He only remembered Charlie mostly because of her incident with Tyler Watts.
Actually, that had been a really funny story. He recalled it at lunch.
"As I remember it, you punched him in the nose?"
