The End of the world

Earth 2025

It was almost 10 a.m and I was rushing to the university, I had to submit my research project today, Henry and Mark were on their way too and I was meeting them at the train station. 

"Hey!" I said to both of them as I saw them coming towards me. Mark had his laptop in one hand and our presentation notes in the other. I gave them both a side hug and we all headed to the university as Professor Collins was waiting for us. 

Just a short introduction, I'm Peter and I'm an assistant at the State University here in Chicago, Mark and Henry were my roommates when we were studying, our bond grew when we realized we had the same interests and hobbies. We were science graduates and wanted to become scientists. Mark, Henry and I have been working on a project for a few years now and today we get to give our final working presentation to Mr. Collins who also happens to be our mentor. 

Being a Monday morning the train station was buzzing with people, some heading to work, some to schools and colleges, it was just another day for them but for us it was a special day as we were one step away from achieving our dreams but only if our work gets approved and our presentation goes well. So all three of us had our fingers crossed, we were excited and nervous at the same time.

Reaching the university we quickly made our way to the meeting room, we could see professor Collins waiting for us at the door. " Hello, I've been waiting for you all, now come on in now and show me what you got there ", he said excitedly.

 All three of us excitedly started preparing for the presentation. Mr. Collins along with some other professors seated themselves and all eyes were on us. Nervously we started the projector and started with our work. Mark was taking care of the slide show while Henry and I got on with the presentation. We have been working on this project for a long time now and this work will be a breakthrough in science if we succeed! Traveling back in time is something many scientists have been dreaming of and we were on our way to achieving that dream. After a lot of hard work and unsuccessful attempts at it, we were finally able to achieve the unachievable. The presentation started and we were explaining to them how our time machine is better and more efficient than the others. After the presentation got over Mr. collins approached me and congratulated me for the good work we showcased today! "Peter I'm extremely proud of you and the presentation was wonderful, I will have to wait for the others to go through your work and wait for a consensus to move ahead with this project, but looking at their reaction today I'm sure everything will happen in your favor, you have very intelligently taken into consideration all the things that other researchers missed out and your hard work will surely pay off, let's wait for the board's approval and then you may start working on your project".

Hearing these encouraging words from Mr. Collins made all my nervousness go away. I was feeling more confident and motivated now. After the presentation, all three of us headed out for some celebration. We got into a bar and ordered beers, Henry and Mark are my best friends and we have never left each other's side even when the going got tough, we have been through thick and thin and that made our bond stronger. As we were sipping our beer I looked at the television that had news on it. There had been UFO sightings in the recent past and it was evident that life in other planets does exist, there had been warnings that there could be an alien invasion in the near future but people never pay heed to such things for them these were just stories. The news reporter told that the UFO sightings in the Texas area had increased and people could see more and more of such flying saucers in the sky. It was evident that these creatures so-called aliens wanted something from us, invade our land and take over our planet maybe, these theories were endless and no one could confirm any of this. I got back to my beer and we started discussing our project.
