After Mr. Collins gave us the good news since then all of us have been on our toes, apparently we start working on our project from Monday and we barely had time to put things together. All three of us made our lists of things we needed for the project and started preparing for Monday morning. We did a last-minute readout of our thesis just to check up on any glitches that we might face when we start working on the machine. As per our thesis, we were good to go.
It was now Monday morning and the three of us were headed to the university. We gathered all our stuff and work material and took the cab to reach office early. We were too excited to start working on the project, it was our baby and we couldn't keep ourselves calm. Mr. Collins had managed to get us everything we needed to start working on this project, the equipment, the material, and everything else that we needed to start our work.
While we were students in the university, the three of us had managed to build a prototype of the time machine but obviously it wasn't functional as it was just for presentation. We studied the prototype in depth and started looking into further details to start making the actual version.
A week had gone by and we had only just managed to make the outline of the time machine, meanwhile the pandemic had spread further and a lot of people were dying all over the world, this virus was proving out to be deadlier than we imagined. Also, there were some more UFO sightings, the times were scary and people had started predicting apocalypse and what not. As per spiritual gurus the end of Earth was near and these were just small indications of it. Keeping away from all the news trying not to be fazed by such things we continued our work on our project.
.... A month had already gone by and we had another 3 months to submit our project. Though the deadline was not that close, we were almost on the last phase of our project. Years of preparation had helped speed up our work. We were already on our way to conduct test runs of the time machine, another few minor repairs and we would be running our first trial.
Mr. Collins had been visiting us frequently to check up on our work, he was thoroughly impressed by the speed in which we all were working, our passion and dedication were unmatched. This was our dream since we were students and now that we were on our way to achieve our dreams we couldn't be happier. Food, sleep, beer, the outside world, we had forgotten everything, during this past month our only focus had been our baby, we slept very little and most of the time we were in the lab running tests and working tirelessly. All our efforts were proving fruitful because we were close to running human trials and this was a great achievement.
Two months later we were ready for our first human trial, we had already conducted trial runs on a mouse, a pigeon, and a rabbit and we were successful there. All of them were sent back in time not for too long and then brought back within 10 minutes, the animal trials were just to check the efficiency of the time machine and to make sure it was doing its work, but the biggest test would be when we conduct the human trials.
After a few more tests it was finally time for the next phase, the human trial. I volunteered myself for the first trial run, though I was very scared as anything could happen during this trial, I could get stuck in limbo, land in another time, not come back, or something might go wrong and I might even die, any of these things could happen but still I wanted to take the risk and be the one to take the first human trial, after all the hard work and time spent on this project I wanted to experience the time machine myself.
I was excited, scared anxcious, words couldn't define what I was feeling right now! I sat alone in a corner and prayed to God to help me, to give me strength, to be with me and protect me, I wasn't a very religious man but at times like these I sought help from the almighty to keep me under his protection.
After a few deep breaths and saying my bye bye to everyone in the room I started to get inside the time machine. The Machine was big enough to fit one person as big as me, considering I was 6 feet tall and average built, but one had to crouch down to avoid any injuries during startup. Once the machine starts there's air pressure that builts up inside the machine and the people standing around it experience something similar to a bolt of lightening and thunder, then with a massive flashlight the machine disappears and goes into the time that's fed into it.
The time where I would be going was decided to be the year 1974 America, after the resignation of the United States President Richard Nixon following the Watergate scandal. We came upon a time which was neither too far away nor too early as we wanted a thorough run on of the time machine. I was dressed in a simple shirt and work pants so that I could fit in easily. I had exactly 30 minutes to get out of the time machine, look around, grab a newspaper or something from this time which will make sure that I was in the correct date and year that was typed in. If I was not back within these 30 minutes then the door to the time machine will automatically close and I will be stuck in that time forever. This was a huge risk but I was ready to to do anything for this project, this time machine was all I had thought about these 5 years and all the hard work was going to pay off today. I was more than ready for this adventure and was even ready to be stuck in time for the sake of our project but I'm sure I'll be back within the specified time and we will be successful in our mission.
