The warm glow of the midday sun dappled the buildings and trees with glowing clouds that floated across the limitless blue horizon of the sky. February is perfect for anyone seeking a beach holiday full of sunshine and hot weather. I wish I could also go on a beach holiday, but I can't. I'm in my final year at medical school, and my audition rotations will end soon, finally. Its a rotation I performed as a sub-intern at other institutions anywhere in the country by going into a specialty with a suboptimal lifestyle, like surgery, except with long hours and high stress.
"Ahh.. I'm starving." I said hungrily as I saw some students eating their yummy lunch at the cottages along the pathway. "The sandwich in the conference has a peanut butter filling, and I hate peanuts. Its disgusting! And the water tastes like rust. It's like its been stored in the storage room for a long time. " I faced Nuri as I complained about the meals that were served in the conference hall that we attended.
"Well, the water in that building always tastes like rust." She gave a half-shrug, agreeing with what I said.
I just rolled my eyes.
"But I saw you drink it."
"Because Im thirsty."
"And you eat that sandwich."
"Because I'm hungry, and you're the only one who hates peanuts."
"But you said you also hated peanuts when we were in high school!"
"Not until we reach college." She clarified.
Oh, I feel betrayed.
"And peanuts are rich in protein, good fat, and fiber, so I like peanuts now," she added with a gentle smile, giving me a you should try to eat peanuts too, its good for your body, sweetie vibe.
"It tastes like—"
"Disgusting. If not disgusting, it tastes like rust. I understand you're a picky eater. I think you're moody today because you're hungry." she continued.
Whatever I do, I cant win against her. Shes Nuri Naivel. She's been my best friend since junior high school. Shes taking clinical diagnostic radiology and, like me, her rotations will end soon. This is why were at the old building of our school, attending that boring conference.
As I laid my eyes on her, her brown, wavy short hair with bangs that swept to the left side of her face swayed a bit as the gentle wind blew towards us, and her innocent eyes sparkled like the sweetest caramel chocolate when the warm sunlight hit her face. Maybe she caught it all when it rained with perfection and an amazing personality because she is the purest of all pure souls.
"Who wouldn't get moody when you only slept for an hour a day, Nuri? I need to eat my favorite beef lasagna to feel alive." I quickly pulled the door open as we reached the cafeteria of the school. Its not crowded today; maybe they preferred to eat at the newly built cottages near the pathways.
As we reached the counter, I ordered a bistro box containing vegetables with chicken and my ultimate favorite, classic beef lasagna. Nuri just ordered the same food as mine. She also paid for my food because I wouldn't be able to eat lunch with her for a week because of our rotations. Did I mention Im applying to the Neurosurgery Residency Program? Well, yeah. Im planning to die single as a neurosurgeon.
"I remembered there was a new guy last week that Kyla introduced to you. Did you turn him down?"
Kyla Cooner, whos also our best friend. She's in law school. I think her law school is fifteen kilometers away from our medical school. And since its her birthday today, we're having a party tonight at the bar. I wish I could be as carefree as Kyla. Its been a month since I last went to a party. The only things I always attend this month are conferences, sessions, interviews, and lectures. It makes me exhausted and depressed.
