     I jolted up, quickly blinking away any drowsiness that tried to pull me back into its soothing grasp. I pushed some of my wavy hair behind my ear, looking around the apartment. Oh, now I recall, I came here with Coltan to check on Wynter. I brushed off my trench coat as I stood up, turning to face the futon that Wynter was usually on. She wasn't. I smelled toast. Wynter was at the other side of the room, leaning on a crutch, watching the toaster.

     "Good morning, Wynter." I yawned. She turned her head to look at me, her long, raven hair brushing the base of her back with the simple movement. She looked at me with lively brown eyes.

     "Mornin'." She smiled. It made me happy to see her so cheerful, despite her now handicapped state. The toast popped up with a click, and Wynter's attention quickly changed.

     Wynter lowered herself carefully down to the floor, the slice of toast in her hand. I realized the absence of Coltan and looked at the olive girl.

     "Where's Coltan?" She looked up from her food, swallowing.

     "He went home."

     "Home?" She nodded at my response. Why would he want to go home? I waited for her to finish her toast. I had to get her to Amery soon, before my whereabouts became suspicious. I rose to my feet, and looked through the small cubby that represented a closet and pulled out her fluffy jacket. It was still slightly stained from the attack, but it was dry, and soft. It was a creamy white, with embroidered roses on the back across the shoulder blades. Wynter got up, pushing against the crutch.

     "We leaving?" She asked in her normal, gentle voice. I nodded quickly, handing her the jacket.

     Wynter was limping behind me, leaning on her crutch. I stepped back, lifting one of her arms over my shoulder.

     "Steady..."
