Poppy

"Someone will come and join you for lunch. I can't promise who, other than mum for sure,"

"Okay,"

"What are you gonna do?"

"Watch some tv,"

"Alright. This is Ashton's office, so it's not your property to touch. Please be safe,"

He kissed my head and left, so I sat at Ashton's desk and looked around. He had lots of files, and his certificate from becoming a doctor. On his desk was his laptop, a photo of him and KayKay, a waterbottle and some drawers.

I opened the top one and it had some stationary in, which was boring so I shut it again. The next one had his lunch in, and the third was locked. Mum had used some pins in my hair because it had different lengths, so I grabbed one and fiddled about until it opened.

And it was empty. Boring.

"Excuse me?"

Ashton crouched beside me and I looked up, blushing.

"Poppy, you cannot do that, okay? What if that was something personal to me?"

I shut it and put the pin back in my hair, standing it. I thought it was a cool trick, and I only wanted to know if he had something fun to do because it was hard to be entertained.

"You can speak,"

"I don't know what to say,"

"Well maybe an apology is a good start,"

"Sorry,"

"What made you think looking through my things was a good idea ay?"

"I wanted to see if you had anything to do, and it is a cool trick. Everyone did it,"

"Society doesn't work the way those people worked, so when you copy their actions it is not okay. It's not a cool trick sweetheart, nor should you do that again,"

"I'm sorry,"

"I forgive you,"

Now that I knew it wasn't funny or cool, I felt guilt build up in my stomach. Knowing the difference between right and wrong had suddenly become so confusing, and overwhelming.

I choked out a sob and he rubbed my back, hugging me when I hugged him.

"You're not in trouble, but if you do it again you might be at risk,"

He got me to sit down on the sofa and I watched tv, passing time while they all worked. I wanted to be at home with Eijah, or at school with some friends, but it was fine here too.

I'd always wished for friends, and now I had siblings which was similar. Bailey was definitely my best friend, even if she was two years younger than me.

"Right miss lock-picker, time for lunch," mum said, passing me a pot of pasta.

"Thankyou,"

"I'm going to pick Bailey up from school early, would you like me to take you home to see if you can manage for an hour or two?"

"Yes please,"

"Is your mouth aching anymore?"

"No,"

"That's good,"

"Hello!"

Luke and Calum came into the office, and sat on the floor, then Sierra came in too.

"Mum, sit next to me,"

She sat down and wrapped her arm around me, so I hit my face in her chest; she kissed my head and I sighed.
