"Hey R? Where's the salt?" Jade calls out from the kitchen.
"Somewhere in the cabinet," Ruth replies and continues to flip through channels to find something decent they'll both be able to enjoy.
After that talk about the split personality issue, they decided it'd be best for Ruth if she stays with her parents for a while. Fuck college. She wouldn't be able to concentrate on her studies if she's too busy going nuts anyway. So why not reach out for help and get it over with?
This is her last night in this apartment, so Jade decided to stay the night with her and help her pack her luggage in the morning.
About five minutes pass and Jade walks into the living room with a big bowl of popcorn in her hands. "Found anything good yet?"
"Nope, no luck so far. Unless you wanna watch Titanic for the hundredth time, of course."
"God no. I'd rather watch the news channel."
They share a laugh and Ruth hands the remote to Jade. "Here. I'll be right back, gotta use the bathroom."
She walks the few steps to the bathroom and reaches out for the door knob, but her whole body suddenly freezes in fear. She doesn't want to even glance at that mirror ever again. Although she's been telling herself it's all in her head, she can't shake the feeling that this could be something more...sinister. She shuddered at the thought and shook her head in denial. What else could it possibly be if not her mind playing tricks on her? There's no such thing as... ghosts.
"You okay there?" Jade calls out from behind her.
Ruth glances back at her and Jade seems to understand the issue just by reading her expression. "There's nothing in there," Jade says slowly like she wants her to understand every word and accept it. "Nothing at all. We've already talked about this."
"Yeah, I know." Ruth sighs, her hand still lingering on the door knob. "I just don't wanna see that damn mirror anymore."
"You know what?" Jade says getting up from the couch and placing the remote on top of the coffee table. "I think I have a solution."
Ruth stares at her curiously as Jade rushes to the bedroom and comes out holding a large hoodie. "What, keeping me warm? That's your solution?" she says sarcastically.
"No, dummy." Jade rolls her eyes as she approaches her. "Move." She opens the bathroom door and steps inside, and Ruth avoids glancing at the mirror at all costs. She can't handle anymore of that horrifying image of her own reflection smiling at her.
God it seems more and more ridiculous every time she thinks about it.
"You can look now," Jade says, and Ruth glances up to see that she has covered the mirror with the hoodie. She has tucked the sleeves into the small gap between the mirror and the wall behind it. "See? Problem solved."
"You're a genius." Ruth stares dumbfounded.
"That better not be sarcasm, you ungrateful bitch." Jade raises her brow playfully.
"It really isn't," Ruth says truthfully. "Now go away so I can pee."
Jade smiles proudly and walks back to the couch.
The handwriting on the inside of the door's still there, but who cares? It's the very last night she'll be spending here anyway.
For the next few hours, they both get lost in the world of rom-coms as they munch on their popcorn. As the credit of the second movie rolls, Ruth turns towards her best friend with a grateful smile. "Thank you so much for being here with me, Jade. You have no idea how much it means to me."
