"Take one with me," I said, holding out the extra pregnancy test toward Leah.
She rolled her eyes, her arms crossed, but after a long sigh, she snatched it from my hand. "Fine," she grumbled before heading into the bathroom first.
I waited outside, pacing in slow circles near the kitchen island. Every second felt like it stretched. The walls, painted in their warm beige hues, felt too quiet, too aware. Like they were listening in on our little moment of chaos.
Leah came back out a few minutes later and calmly placed her test stick on the counter. "Done," she said simply, not meeting my eyes.
My turn.
I exhaled a long breath, grabbing the second stick. The plastic felt heavier than it should've. I walked in, shut the bathroom door behind me, and stared at the white stick for a moment before sitting down.
It was weird how something so small could hold the answer to something so huge. Something that might change my life, or might not.
I peed. Set the test down. Washed my hands.
Then I carried it out and placed it carefully beside Leah's on the kitchen table.
"How long do we have to wait?" I asked, rubbing the back of my neck.
"Box said four to five minutes." Leah didn't look up from her hands, which were now clenched together in her lap.
"Let's set a timer," I said, opening a drawer and grabbing the old kitchen timer. I twisted the knob until it ticked toward the five-minute mark. The sound of its steady ticking filled the silence as we both sat at the table, the two white sticks resting like time bombs on the wood between us.
A minute passed.
"What are you going to do if you're pregnant?" Leah asked suddenly, not looking at me.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I mean... what's your plan?"
I glanced down at my hands. They were shaking just a little, enough to be noticeable. "I'm going to keep my baby," I answered with quiet conviction.
"And Embry?"
"What about him?"
"You think he's going to step up? Be a dad?"
I smiled a little. "He'll be part of the baby's life. I'd never keep them apart. Even if we're not imprinted, even if this whole thing is messy, I wouldn't do that to him."
Leah nodded, slowly. "And if you are imprinted? If that's what this is?"
"I don't know," I said honestly. "I don't want to make decisions based on assumptions. Let's just get through today first."
