"Welcome to Miami General Hospital. You 9 are about to embark on a journey of a lifetime tomorrow so today is just a tour and rundown of how things go here. I am Doctor Rashim Fashad. Chief of this here amazing hospital. You all was probably confused how we skyrocketed to the top of modern medicine and became one of the top 3 hospitals up there with WoodHayes up in New Jersey. Well we became a teaching hospital, I came and fired half the staff and turned this place around in 2 years time. Now young doctors like yourself around the world wants to match here. Now follow me as our tour begins in the lobby. Are their any questions?" I admired his great silky indian skin as he gave us that amazing introduction with no lies. Miami General have climbed the ladder that is medicine. Some say its because of the huge sponsorship it has with MedCo but either way anybody who is anybody want to become a surgeon out of this place.
This very eager latinx girl raised her hand next to me.
"Yes Doctor Reyes?" He asked already knowing her name. That was a bit intimidating. For him to have done his homework on all of us.
"Is it true the ones interning to be a surgeon works under you?" She asked eager as he laughed, "its 9 of you interning. You will not only focus on surgery that isn't how I run my hospital anymore. The patients with tumors and the patients with a broken arm is all the same to me. They get the same love, care, and attention. I had a little boy come in when I was just like you. Interning and just wanting to be inside of an O.R. The doctor I was shadowing told me to check this little boy who arm was broken. I did everything and went back to the doctor. He told me he would he in to do the cast within the hour he had a more pressing case...turned out the little boy had compartment syndrome and died before he was even checked again. So now lets get this tour on the road shall we." He walked off and we walked behind him. I heard my phone buzzing. I pulled it out my scrub pocket as we had to dress up today and saw Q calling me. I swiftly ended the call and shot him a txt.
"Txt me!!!"
"This is the lobby. State of the art. It was redone a few months ago. It is nicknamed Alice Rabbit hole because its 3 different directions to go. Left is Trauma. Straight ahead is the cafeteria and mass waiting room and up those stairs is the start of your career. So lets go their first and meet the rest of the team that will be aiding into turning you into Superior Doctors."
We walked upstairs into the main atrium as we saw some commotion and a loud crowd over in the far left corner. Lots of men in suits, Doctors, and to my surprise Children in hospital gowns with red bands on.
"this is the best orientation day other interns before you will be jealous. Today is our Adopt-A-Patient Conference with our pediatric wing." Doctor Fashad told us as the other only black man spoke, "And why the kids have on red bands?"
"They are apart of the red band clan. Its a new program I started to raise morale between patients especially these. They are all too sick to go home and most of them are living their last days here with us...so the red band clan is a way for them to never feel alone even when their parents arent here. And they will be "adopted" by a player with the Miami Dolphins today-so the smiles they have are once in a lifetime." He told us as I stared over at the men in suits and I couldnt lie I was searching for Cory Diamond.
"Okay follow me I will show you to the locker rooms. You will all get to meet the players at Lunch time. Chop Chop." He told us as I quickly fell to the back of the crowd and pulled my phone back out to see Q had txted me asking did I see our mother. She was home when I left. I quickly replied, "Check the diner. She has been asking to get there all week."
Q.
I opened the diner door and the bell went off as I saw the team of employees in the back in what seemed like a congregation. I swiftly walked around the counter and waved at Miss Sophia as she took take out orders at the register. I went behind into the kitchen and I heard my mother.
