Chapter-5 The Prom Night

Chapter- 5 THE PROM NIGHT

Nancy and Bess had just realised that prom night was tomorrow. This year’s prom night was not filled with that much excitement as it used to be. Bess for the first time was not at all over excited; she was too involved in the mystery going on.

Nancy even had to meet Ned; he was just here for prom night. They both were going to see each other after 1 month. Ned had gone to study to U.K. She was planning to go and meet him at the airport. She had promised him she would be there to greet him. Nancy asked Bess “Bess, can you be a darling and come with me in the morning?” Bess was quite surprised by the question and said “Of course, I am coming. If you didn’t ask me I would come with you.”

Nancy told Bess “We will have to leave at 7:30 in the morning as the flight lands at 8:15. Nancy and Bess knew well that Bess wouldn’t get up in time so Bess asked Nancy “Nan can you sleep at my place tonight?” Nancy agreed she just told that she would make a phone call to Hannah. Nancy slept at Bess’ place. Nancy got up at 7:00 in the morning. She woke Bess up and made some breakfast. They left at 7:45. They reached just in time to meet Ned. Ned was a young, handsome and tall man. He had black hair and green eyes and sinking dimples. He looked too cute for words. Nancy ran towards Ned and hugged him tight. Bess who was always teasing Nancy asked them “Do you’ll need any privacy?” Nancy glared at Bess and asked her to shut up! Nancy told everyone “Let’s move guys. We are getting late.”

 Ned had already asked Nancy about prom night. He told everyone to be ready at 5:00 in the evening.  He told Bess that he would get Jake along with him. Ned wanted to hang around with Nancy, so they both went for a movie while Bess left for needle and thread.

All the work was on her since Christie was away. As Bess entered the shop, she saw that Christie was showing a customer some fabric. After the customer left she started clearing it up and humming a favourite song. Christie was so busy that she didn’t see Bess enter.  Bess said “Hey Christie!” Christie realised that Bess had come in the shop.

She looked up and replied her with a friendly wave. Bess went up to her and helped her clear up. Bess asked Christie “Christie I suppose that you needed rest. So why are you working?” Christie smiled at her and said “I am jolly fit to get back to work. And you see I am too bored at home. No work to do and no scolding from Stella.” Bess and Christie laughed.

Bess looked at Christie hesitated to speak. Christie saw that Bess wanted to say something to her she told Bess “what do you want to say? Tell. Please!!!” So Bess asked her “Are you scared Christie that something might happen to you?” Christie laughed and told Bess “No! Of course not! Just hope no more attacks or thefts happen.” Bess smiled and thought what a good friend she had.

Both the girls were working till 3:00 in the afternoon. It was a Saturday and the store closed early. Christie told that she would close the shop and Bess could leave but Bess insisted on her staying there. Bess didn’t want to take any risk on leaving Christie alone. So Christie left in 10 minutes and Bess closed the shop and left as fast as she could. She took a cab and went to Nancy’s place. It was prom night at last. She had to get ready but she had her dress at Nancy’s house. Nancy was about to get ready when Bess arrived. Both the girls got ready. Bess was wearing an ink blue dress so she had done blue and green makeup to match it. She looked gorgeous. Nancy was wearing a short pink dress and Bess did some light make up for her. Nancy was just touching up her hair, when there was a horn; it was Ned’s car waiting for the girls. Nancy was wearing sandals while Bess was wearing her new stilettos.

 They both got into the car. Nancy blushed when Ned whispered in her ear “Oh! You are looking like a diva.” Bess was sitting at the back with Jake. Jake was just staring at her and said “You look dazzling. I am sure we are going to be the couple of this night.”

 They reached the party hall in 15 minutes. Everyone hit the dance floor. They drank cocktails and danced; they had dinner and were planning to go on the other side of the party which was an ice skating ring. The couple of the night was one of Nancy’s classmate Laura and her boyfriend Harry. Everyone was cheering and clapping for them. The party was almost over. Jake had to go as he had to meet his mother who was hospitalised. He left, so Nancy, Bess and Ned went to the skating ring they were skating for a while when Nancy met one of her friends called Lucy. Lucy was teaching Nancy some stunts and somersaults. Lucy went off to another spot where everyone was enjoying a cup of steaming cocoa, while Nancy practiced some stunts and enjoyed herself. While Nancy skated happily she heard someone call for help. She was going to see who was near the fir tree. Suddenly she heard a crack. She realised it was the ice beneath her legs which were cracking, but it was too late! Nancy fell down in the ice cold water…
