Jade's Pov
Of all the ways I imagined my day to go, this certainly wasn't what I had in mind. Now here I am in my apartment, sitting on the couch cradling a box in my lap sent by who knows who. Something tells me it definitely is not an early birthday present. Let me start from the beginning.
So, my day started like every other day. I woke up, just few minutes before my alarm rang, drenched in sweat because of the same nightmare my brain plays every time I try to sleep. Then I showered, made breakfast and did everything I do on daily basis. Yup, completely normal.
I went to work and sat in front of the desk at the hospital, where I work like every other day.
"Hey Jade! Got some new records for you to add in the system."
Wow just the thing I was waiting for. Ha-ha, kidding. As much as I hate this job of sitting in front of a computer every day and attending to random people, I am glad I actually have a job.
"Thank you, Jules," I smiled at the sweet woman and went back to typing on my screen.
"I will just leave them here," she kept the files on my desk and went back to whatever she was doing. Jules is a nurse and in case you haven't figured it out yet, I work as a receptionist here in NY- Central Hospital.
"My wife...where is.... she?" a man hysterically inquired, panting for breath and looking worried as hell. Seems like he just came from running a marathon.
"Name, sir?" I asked politely.
"Hannah Miller," the man answered impatiently.
"Just a second, sir. Third floor, ER room 1." I informed him with a smile.
"Thank you," he rushed out and just like that he ran towards the elevator.
"Poor Mr. Miller." A voice sounded from beside me.
"Why so?" I asked, turning to the familiar voice I have grown used to in past year.
"His wife is in labor. Apparently, she's in a critical condition," my friend Sophie replied.
"Well then it's a good thing she is in Dr. Brown's hands, right?"
"You put too much of faith in that woman, J." Sophie shook her head.
"She did save my life," I reminded her, shooting her a pointed look.
Dr Brown. She's the Medical Director of this hospital. She is one of the kindest women I have ever met and a very talented doctor. She has been there for me when I had no one. Let's just say if it wasn't for her, I would have been dead. So yeah, I kind of owe her.
Then there is Sophie, who has helped me a lot too. She was there during my worse and now we are really good friends. I am grateful to have her in my life.
"Right" she scoffed. "When you were brought here, you were as good as dead. No surgery would have saved you. You being alive is a pure miracle. Trust me babe." she winked. I went back to my work without replying.
"You look tired," she commented after a while, sounding concerned.
"Hmm..." I pretended to ignore what she was hinting at, hoping she would let it go.
"Nightmares again?" She asked.
"Hmm...." I deflected.
"Jade," she chastised.
"Ughh, can we talk about it later?" or like never
"Fine. But you should see that therapist again if it's starting to-"
