CHAPTER FIVE
"Well, Elizabeth?" Alice held the phone up in the air, "I'm waiting for an explanation."
"I-I..." Betty felt like crying, she wasn't ready to come out, she didn't want to come out like this, "It's nothing...Veronica and I are just friends."
"Really, Betty?" Polly intervened, "I don't think friends text each other using sexual innuendos."
"Its a joke!" Betty's attempts to hide the truth were failing as Veronica send more messages through to her phone.
Vee 🖤: Can't stop thinking about your lips!
Vee 🖤: Are you thinking about mine???
Vee 🖤: Am I being too forward?Alice scrolled through her daughter's message, already knowing the password to her phone. "What is the meaning of all this? The closet must be hot from all our kissing?" She read off the phone.
"Hold on," Hal Cooper groaned, "Are you gay?"
Betty's eyes were wide. "No! No, I'm not. It's a joke. I told you, it happens all the time, it's a girl thing."
It was crazy how things in Riverdale could get out of hand. One second it's a little family drama and the next it's the talk of the town, splashed on the newspapers. That's what happened when you live in a small, quiet town.
"I'm not allowing this, Betty," Hal shook his head, "It's disgusting! I won't have my daughter becoming a fucking lesbo!"
"Dad!" Betty pleaded.
"No, Betty I think your Dad is right," Alice clicked on the Phone app of Betty's phone, "You're going to call this Vee black heart person and tell them you don't want anything to do with them."
"Her name is Veronica Lodge," Betty said.
"Veronica Lodge?" Alice's eyes widened, "No, no that's even worse. Hermione Lodge's daughter? You calling her right now and clearing up this mess."
Betty's hand shook as she took her phone from her Mom, she slowly dialled Veronica's number. They all waited in silence as the phone rang.
"Hey, Bee," Veronica's cheerful voice was on the phone.
"Veronica...hey."
Veronica could tell she was upset.
"What's up? Missing me already?"
"No, that's not it," Betty looked to her Mom.
"Put it on speaker," Alice whispered to her and she following the instructions, placing it on loud speaker so they could all hear - unknown to Veronica.
"I know it's soon to ask and...um," Betty felt her heart break as she heard Veronica's giggle, "I just can't stop thinking about you. I really, really want to date you someday."
"Uh..." Betty's eyes scanned the room, her family members looked shocked. Her dad glared at her with cold eyes.
"Tell her no," Hal whispered.
"I can't date you," Betty said.
"I thought everything was okay with us now. Do you not like me?"
"No...I-I like Archie," Betty's eyes were watering now, she couldn't stop it as tears fell down her cheeks.
"What? He doesn't like you, Betty. Not like I do," Veronica's voice cracked, she let out a bitter laugh, "No. This is bullshit. What's happening? Why can't you really date me? Are in trouble or something."
"Why can't I date you?" Betty repeated, trying to ask herself, "No. I'm not in any trouble. Well, I'm not gay."
"That's not what it looked like yesterday."
"Tell her you don't talk to queers," Hal encouraged.
"I don't talk to..." Betty swallowed the lump in her throat, "I...don't talk to queers."
"Bye Betty," Veronica hung up the call when she'd had enough of Betty's shit. She thought they were past this and now all of a sudden she was back into it again.
Betty felt embarrassed, her cheeks flushed red as the call ended. Her parents just stood there satisfied, pleased that they had done their job.
"Elizabeth Cooper!" Alice called as Betty ran up the stairs, ignoring her calls.
