Dr. Scott could tell that his favorite Resident was distracted. Not distracted enough to make a medical error, but distracted enough about people around her.
More precisely, distracted from him.
He knew it was wrong to think of her as anything more than his resident, because she was Grayer's at the moment. But he knew that if this relationship was anything like the one Grayer had with his cousin Anna, it was bound to end up with him picking the pieces again.
This time he was ready.
Because he was ready, he was always making sure to make his presence known to Pierce, to show her he was there, always for her. Sometimes he was a little too forward and flirty, and she would notice and put some space between them very casually, and almost unnoticeably.
This time she hadn’t done anything about it, because she hadn’t noticed.
“I bet me buying you dinner today that there is something brewing on your mind.” He said, while they were making rounds.
“What?” She asked distracted as she went over Mr. Dominguez’s chart.
“Is there something bothering you?” He asked as they made their way to the elevators.
She was not paying attention to where he was leading her.
“No…not really. Just stuff. Life. You know?” She said smiling, looking down at her shoes.
He pondered on this for a minute. “Right. Life. Sure. Stuff. Did you have lunch today?”
“Yeah. I think I stole one of Jenner’s doughnuts a while ago…” She said while checking Mr. Dominguez’s chart, which she had taken with them to order some tests done.
This was interesting. She was not filtering any of her thoughts first.
“Do you think that I should start working out?” He asked, trying not to sound too serious.
“No. I think we do enough exercise running around the hospital all day. Plus I think you have nice biceps.” She said when they reached pathology and she handed them Mr. Dominguez’s chart. Interesting he mused.
“Does this tie make me look stupid?” He said while he led her to the parking lot and she was checking her email on her phone.
“Yes, a little bit. I don’t think that color suits you.” She said while opening the car door.
“It was a gift. I think so too. Do you like working with me?” He asked while he drove off and she was writing some emails back to people.
“Yeah, I enjoy working with you a lot. I like this hospital.” She said as a matter of fact.
“Do you think that Sean from radiology is as cute as the other nurses think?”
“He is not really my type, though I can see why his boyish looks can be appealing to some women.” She was also not paying attention to the road. Or the fact that they were driving to dinner. This was incredibly amusing for William Scott.
“Do you have a type?” He dared asked as they pulled up to her favorite restaurant.
“No. Where are we?” The window to ask her if she liked him had closed.
“Dinner. Come on. You are practically working on overdrive. I don’t think you noticed when we left the hospital. You really ought to pay more attention Dr. Pierce.” He teased her.
“Did I seriously? This is embarrassing.” She laughed as he opened the door for her.
“It’s okay. Happens to everyone. My roommate spent days like this during finals. I think he proposed to his then-girlfriend. They’ve been married for ten years.”
