"Ouch," you whispered under your breath as Sam stepped on your toes for the hundredth time. "Sorry." His countenance made you laugh. "You're not from around here, are you? " you asked. He sighed and stopped, scratching the back of his neck.

"Children here learn every dance possible from the age they learn to toddle. Here, We'll start easy," you said, placing his right hand on the left side of your body and his left hand in your right.

"Y-You're right... by the way. I-I'm not from here," he said. You pulled your body close to his. "You lead with your right foot," you say, pushing his leg back with yours. He blushed as he got the hang of it.

"If you're not from around here, where are you from?" you asked, spinning yourself into him so that your back was against his front.

"Kansas," he replied, spinning you out again. You squealed, and he pulled you back to him, holding both of your hands in his. Your breaths were quickened as your eyes met again.

You just met him, but you could get so lost in his hazel eyes. It was troubling. You can't figure out what it is about him.

"Kansas... Now, where might that be?" you asked, turning your body around. He was caught off guard by your hands which were placed on his chest, his hands now resting on your waist. "Uh... It's a small... sta... country outside of..." he started, but the music stopped.

"Now, take my hand." He did. "Now we bow to each other to end the dance," you said, curtsying. He followed with a bow.

"Sam!" Mr. Novak grabbed Sam's free arm. "Your brother and father need to talk to you. Now," his low voice bellowed.

"Quickly! Follow me." You yank him through the crowd, giggling.

"Excuse us. Sorry," he said as you bump into people again and again. You run through different doors and finally find an empty hallway.

You put a hand to your heart, catching your breath. Suddenly, the urge to laugh became too much to bear. You laughed so hard, you bent over because your stomach hurt so much.

You went to stand up again, but just your luck. Your skirt got caught under feet. "Whoa..."

You almost fell backward but were caught by a steady hand on your back and a firm grip on your hand. "Careful... Ladybug," he said softly as he pulled you to your feet a little too fast.

You fell into him yet again. "Sorry," you said again. You never apologize this much, much less to a man.

He tucked a lock of hair that had become loose from the rest behind your ear. You looked into his eyes and felt yourself being drawn to his lips. Your eyes closed as an instinct as your faces drew to each other like a magnet.

Just as your lips were about to touch, seemingly out of nowhere, Mr. Novak appeared. "Sam. You need to come with me," he said sternly. Your gazes didn't break until a hand was placed on Sam's shoulder.

"Wait. What's your name?" he asked. "Y/N.
Y/N L/N," you say. "Y/N," he repeated.  As he was pulled away against his will, he slid something into your hand.

When he was out of sight, you lifted your hand and revealed the object. A bracelet. A ratty and beaten up bracelet. Leather. It was bound to look like a rope, and there was a metal clasp. You'd never seen anything like that before. No matter, you held it to your face, breathing in his faint scent that was left behind.

*Midnight*

You sat on the wooden loveseat that had its place under the window. You gazed longingly at the moon, fiddling with his bracelet, and wondering if he too was thinking about you.

Bernadette climbed into your lap and snuggled into your chest, her tired eyes looking into yours. "Oh, Little One. You're having trouble sleeping?" you asked. She nodded with a frown on her face.

"It's just so difficult to sleep when you look so troubled over here." Her voice was little, but loud. "Hush, now. You'll wake the others," you warned, tucking her snarly hair behind her ear.

"They're already awake," she said. Just then, both of the beds began to rustle, and out came one girl from each. Eileen sat in front of you, and Penelope climbed over you to rest herself on your side.

"We couldn't sleep with you so restless over here," Eileen signed. You smiled. "I'm fine, really," you spoke with your voice and hands. A task you had mastered at an early age.

"We saw you with that boy. The one with the mop on his head." Bernadette said, earning a giggle from you.

"You like him, don't you?" Penelope asked. You sighed and looked back at the moon, hiding your smile from them.

"I told you," Bernadette said to Penelope. "No, I told you," she argued back. "Did not!" "Girls. That's quite enough. Alright. Time for bed." You started to stand, but the girls stopped you.

"Wait. Y/N, sing to us?" Bernadette asked. You giggled and looked at the other girls. Eileen was lying at the other end of the loveseat, half asleep already. "Okay. Okay, just... calm yourselves."

Bernadette nuzzled back into you, and Penelope rested her head on your shoulder.  You cleared your throat and took a breath.

"Lavender's blue, dilly dilly, lavender's green. When you are king, dilly dilly, I shall be queen. Lavender's green, dilly dilly, lavender's blue. You must love me, dilly dilly, 'cause I love you. Who told you so, dilly dilly, who told you so? 'Twas my own heart, dilly dilly, that told me so." You laughed to yourself, seeing that Benny and Eileen were fast asleep.

You carefully woke Eileen and carried the youngest to the full-sized bed. Eileen crawled in next to her, and you tucked them in, giving them each a kiss on the forehead.

When you walked back to your bed, Penelope was already cuddled into the covers. You latched the bracelet around your wrist and turned the light off. "You know you got the words wrong?" Penelope whispered as you pulled the blanket over yourself.

"Pardon?" "In the song. It's 'when I am king, dilly dilly, you shall be queen.' Like a man telling a story to a woman, but it was like you were telling a story to a man." You tucked her hair behind her ear and looked to the ceiling.

"Oh, Poppy. Your imagination never ceases to amaze me," you smiled. "I wasn't imagining it. You're in love. You just won't admit it." You sighed and played with the bracelet.

"What if I am? I mean, I couldn't leave you and the others here with Mother. Especially when William is leaving so soon." You looked down at her and heard her soft snores. "Goodnight, Poppy."
