Mason's POV
It took me over an hour to pull myself together enough to head over to the courthouse. Prisoners set for trial were held in the lower levels while court officials and the council members occupied offices on the upper levels. I passed quickly through security. As a member of the society they barely even searched me. In fact, once I gave my word that I would not use magic during my visit with Ena they simply smiled and waved me through giving me tense smiles and warm wishes of luck with my soul mate.
Their smiles and words of encouragement surprised me for just a moment. It shouldn't have but I guess my time on the other side had me momentarily forgetting what a peaceful and cooperative society my home was. Their reaction shouldn't have surprised me in the least since the foundation of my society was built on peace, honor and love. Violence and crime were basically unheard of. In fact, before now the most recent criminal trial was over three hundred years ago.
I took a deep breath and thanked them for their well wishes before rounding the corner of the lobby and coming to the top of the stairs. I paused briefly to try and catch my breath. The walk through the court house lobby tired me more than I would have thought it could. My chest throbbed in pain and my lungs ached terribly just trying to pull in more air. I was forced to stand at the top of the stairs for several moments.
After a short rest, I slowly made my way to the stairs and started my descent downward. With each step I took I allowed myself to think of the ramifications of my current actions. The courts would not allow Ena's actions to pass without retribution. They would need to make it clear this type of behavior was unacceptable and needed to be prevented in the future.
I knew I would be required to take responsibility for her actions. Ultimately this would need to become my trial not Ena's. After all it was my fault that she was drug to this side of the veil and it was my fault that Ena was unprepared and therefore a threat to the society and all our most reverent beliefs.
By the time I reached the last stair I was again exhausted. I could see Ena's door straight ahead. I knew it was her door since there was a signwith bright red printed letters that read
'Enter with caution, Prisoner within'
Then below in my mother's hand it also said
'This is my son Mason's soul mate Ena. Treat her with respect!'
I was a little surprised to realize there appeared to be no locks on the door. I turned the knob and gently pushed the door and found it slid easily open. Ena was sound asleep on a soft looking cot. I looked around the room and was pleased to find the accommodations were relatively nice. I assumed my mother had something to do with that.
Then I looked again at Ena's sleeping form. That's when it hit me; Ena had a subjugator around her neck. A subjugator was a device that was created thousands of years ago to control people against their will. It was basically a magic device that forced the wearer to obey all commands from the one who placed it on them.
I felt the anger inside of me build as I realized the nerve that someone had placing a subjugator on my soul mate. Ena was an honorable woman who deserved to be treated with respect. Her only crime in life was being my soul mate. I found myself growling the words out loud as I reached out with the intention of removing the subjugator.
"How dare someone place a subjugator on my soul mate!"
I knew I shouldn't have touched it the second I felt the heat. I quickly released the subjugator and took a huge step back. I wasn't fast enough; I watched in horror as a bolt of lightning shot out from the subjugator and struck me hard enough to send me sailing across the room. My world spun and everything froze for half a second.
I had my eyes tightly sealed trying to regain my balance when I felt her presence I knew Ena was awake before I forced myself to look back at her. I could feel her intense glare burning a hole into my back. When I finally turned and looked at her the expression on her face was almost comical. She was staring at me as if I had three heads.
I knew if I remained silent Ena would eventually relax. My soul after all was already touching and caressing hers. It was only natural since we were soul mates. Her conscious mind might be confused but her soul recognized mine the second I entered the room. The smart thing would have been to wait for her to say the first words but I was always a bit too impulsive so instead I found myself smiling stupidly and saying
"Easy love I know I am one hot looking guy, but now is simply not the time for you to jump my bones. We need to talk a bit before we get busy."
I hadn't been prepared for her next moves but I certainly should have been. After all, I had spent years with Ena and I knew that she hated being made a fool. My soul could feel her anger and confusion. I should have trod forward with care. It seemed that I just took one wrong step after another.
In my rush to get my soul mate back, I just kept making things worse. Instead of putting her at ease I had infuriated her. I felt the sting before my eyes even registered her movement. Her hand made full contact with my face. I heard the slap and felt it almost at the same time. I blinked hard as I heard her hiss
"As if! You think that I would fall at your feet just because my soul is confused? I know what you are and I know what you did. You think you can fool me into believing you are my soul mate. I know better. Don't you dare come anywhere near me or I will remove you head from your shoulders with my bare hands!"
I took a huge step backwards and placed both hands in the air trying to show her that I meant no threat. My brain was processing everything at high speed. We were in a bad situation and I needed to do something fast. So before I could change my mind I said
"Ena, I am sorry to have upset you. How about we call a truce? It's my fault you are being held here against your will. Let me explain everything so that you can be set free. The real crime was mine. I want to make sure you are not punished for my selfishness. I know you don't think I am your soul mate. But I believe with every fiber of my being that you are mine. I would gladly give my life for yours. Feel my soul and know the truth of it."
